I have been given a 93 Eclipse DOHC N/T that won't start and likely has bent valves and/or needs new timing/Balance shift kit.

Condition of the car-

127K on the clock.

Body good without rust. Lower plastic valance is "jacked up" from a minor rear collision.

Interior very good except for missing driver side sun visor.

Possible options-

Sell as rolling chasis. So far everyone that stops and asks about the car wants to pay me $250 cash, drop a battery in it and drive it to work and school .... uh, it won't start and needs hundreds of dollars of work.

Part it out. Seems like a waste of pretty good car. I would rather see someone enjoy it, appreciate it, and make it driveable... yes I know it is not a AWD turbo car, but still maybe somebody wants to have the "looks" without the expenses.

Repair and sell. I doubt that I could do much more than recover my expenses and would not make enough profit to make it worth my trouble.

Repair and Keep. Possible. How much to do valve job/repair? $65-300?

Timing belt Kit $200. Balance shaft belts.

How big of a "b*tch" is it to mess with the head without impact tools?

Ideas. Suggestions.

Thanks for any input.

I am not a hardcore DSM person, but I do like the idea of anything that is not Honda.

I say go for the repair. Even though it may cost you more than you anticipate selling the car for, it beats selling it for $250 :thumbdown , or letting the stuff you don't part out sit in your garage or driveway for who-knows-how-long, like my brother in law...

If you get it back in running condition, you should be able to sell it for a good $2,000 if it's in really good shape. :thumb:

Good luck!

I agree with jason.. you got it for free, so put a few hundred dollars into it, then sell it and make a very nice profit/downpayment on a AWD :thumb:

IMO part the thing out, whys pend extra money on a messed up 1gnt, part it out make some cash and call it a day with it.

i would fix it up even thow it aint turbo. You can find a 1g head for like 150 then belt 50$ u can do all the work your self it isnt hard at all.

i spent 60 on the valves and 90 on a head rebuild kit
did it all with no air tools

and im 16 so i say fix it

Did you replace the valve guides too?

I think I will take your advice and repair it.

Seems like a waste of a good car.

Did you remove all the manifolds from the head 1st? Or did you remove the head with the intake and exhaust maniforlds still on?

take off the exhuast mani! and the intake mani will come off with the head its the best way good luck. u can do it im 17 and did it about 4 times :thumb:
