I went to the store today to get my normal PH7317 Fram oil filter, and while looking through the book I saw that for 1992, they give a different part number, part PH3950. I had gotten an OEM filter from the dealer a while back and remembered that it was more along the size of the PH3950 but I have used the 7317 for the last 2 or so years. Anybody know what filter I should be using or does it not matter? I am asking because the 3950 is much larger and I think it would work better than the 7317.
Let me know,
Jeff

Yeah, bleh. And all my driving life I've been hearing bad things about Pennzoil. Oddly both companies are still around, and I've yet to find a car damaged by either.

The crappiest filter sold today is twice the filter made when DSMs hit the market.

Frams are fine.

Wix are supposed to be best.

Few of you guys run oil and the filter long enough to even be concerned with what you use.

Use the biggest filter you can get past the downpipe.

Before my friend put in his 3rd Revision HLAs he used switched from a Fram oil filter to a OEM oil filter and the HLAs dramaticlly quieted down. Every since then I've been sold on going with an OEM oil filter. I've also heard and read how crappy the Fram filters were but it wasnt untill then when I heard it with my own 2 ears.

I thought the 7 bolt was introduced in 1992? And why would changing the flywheel or whatever it is change the size of the filter?

Uptil the 4th month of 92, they were 6-bolt. after that they were 7. The flywheel wasn't the only thing that they changed in these motors. They changed the pistons, rods, and crank. Along with a few other "improvments" to reduce inirtial mass in the intent to make a quicker reving motor. Wich they are, but they're not as strong. The weight that they saved by making everything lighter, took strength away. Also they have a possibility of crank-walk, but not as much in the pre 95's.
As to the oil filter, they changed the size of it because they say that they also improved the oil flow and pressure. But I have no #'s to prove this. So you decide. Like I said, you can put either filter on a 6 or 7 bolt engine, But Id stick to the recomended one.

Steve. :D

:talon: OMG I am shocked to read through all eleven of your replies and nobody even mentions anything about the K&N performance gold oil filters... I just put one on my car (part number 1005) and it is by far the best mindset towards a filter I could have!!! Although, I have noticed that my engine is quiter now that I put in the lucas oil stabilizer in with the K&N filter. I do notice a smoother performance out of my car now...give it a try!
