i was looking through the paper and i found an ad for a 1992 eagle talon tsi awd turbo-$2200 . So i figure what the heck, ill call see when the production date is, turns out its got the 6/4 bolt combo. so i decide to go look at it, and i like what i see. all black ,tan leather,sunroof,120,000 miles, 5spd(shifts REAL smooth), ABS and LSD, all completely stock. well to make a long story short something went wrong with the car while i was driving it (with the guy ) and it stalled and wouldnt start back up. he had just washed the motor and let it sit and it was running funny, which it was before i tightend a few connections and it ran fine but smelt very rich, and idled low. Im sure its a simple fix but do you guys think i should get on this deal? i mean its the perfect set up here... i know i already have one but i just toasted it today. Plus the head was just redone and a new timing belt. I know its an easy fix, something just got wet, hopefully he doesnt find the problem so i can get it for a good deal, he seemed pretty clueless about these cars. Sorry for the rant, but anyone have any advice?or something else to check for?

If you have to ask if you should purchase it or not.... on a dsm board...

You shouldn't buy it.
Dude, it's YOUR money. It's YOUR insurance rates... If you know or assume you can fix it cheap cheap cheap then get it.

ha no im not asking if i should buy , i know the reply :thumb: , im just wondering what else i should look for, i mean ive done my research on these cars but i know theres a whole lot of knowlege at this site, so i was just wondering if anyone else had some input on what i should look for. i dont want to make the same mistake again(buying a turbo awd that was beat to poo)

Oh Ok!

Inspect it very throughly and also make sure to check the compression of the engine and also make sure you check the shaftplay on the turbo. Other things to check are um...

The timing belt (for excessive wear or anything out of the ordinary)
The coolant (color or if it looks like it hasn't been changed in ages)
The oil on the dipstick (does it stick to the stick or what's it look like)
If it smokes or not (let it idle for about 5-8 minutes while your looking it over)
Check for um... Rust, Dents, Body Damage and Scratches that you just can't ignore.
Turbo shaftplay (remove the intake off the turbo and see if the fin wiggles much)
Compression check (this I wouldn't pass up doing actually, check vfaq.com under engines)

Um...
See if he dosen't mind you "Romping On It" through 2nd and 3rd gear to make sure no ODD NOISES or problems show up while your driving it hard.

Anything else?

Yeah if you dont mind, the cars production date was in Oct. of 91 , and im not sure when they went to the larger rotors, would you happen to know then the"big brake" change happend?

yeah i asked him if i could pull the ecu and look at it, so he let me, but there was no fishy smell although i did see a very small amount of crud near the big capacitor. Even if thats the case i can swap my 90 ecu in there since its an EPROM anyway and brand new. i just wish the car i had now was a 91' so swaping parts would be easier. i remember hearing about swapping pins 6 and 14 for changing the ecu between a 90 and 91-94s, anyone know where i can find out how to do that? thanks for all the help by the way :thumb:
