I found a 93 M/T AWD TSi about 4 hours from my house. It has pwr locks, windows, moon roof, seats, mirrors,cc, everything works. Also it has a new T-25 turbo, aftermarket manifold, brakes and minor little things. The motor has 179000 miles on it (that has me a little worried), I am told it puffed white smoke only in the winter and on start up. A panel on the driver side door was replaced and there is a small dent above the left rear tire as well. The only thing he said was wrong with it is that the car does not blow cold air whne the AC is on. The guy is asking 2000 and is pretty set on that amount, is this fair and if the AC is bas how much or hard is that to fix????

he said the old one had some shaft play on it so he went and replaced with that, is a T25 bad?

umm yea its horrible!! LOL jk no it shouldnt be

Looking for a little more help from the experianced members here. I have yet to find one cheaper so if anyone has some ideas that would be great as well. Thanks

I talked to the guy and he said it was a T-25 garrett 2nd gen turbo, Is this good. I ask dumb questions because I don't know anything about Tsi's, this is all new to me. Thanks again for the help

The stock 14b is bigger, and if its puffing smoke reguardless of what time of year, and it has that many miles on it, I would offer him $900 NO MORE, especially with a smaller turbo, hes asking way too much, find another one, you will kick yourself if you pay that much later on.

I test drove it and it does not puff now, what makes the differance between warm and cold and why it would smoke???

Its too much IMO. I paid that much for my 93 TSI AWD with 100k and a brand new clutch. It also had a MBC, boost gauge, and hard intake pipe.
If I were you, I would spend lots of time on this site reading and learning. If you do this you will be able to make an informed decision when you buy a DSM(like knowing why you don't want a t-25 over the stock 14b). I knew nothing a year ago(whoa...its my 1yr anniversary of being a DSMer...guess I'll spend it wrenching on the TSI LOL) when I got mine and have learned a ton from this and other sites. The net has saved my ass during many projects on my TSI. Trust me....you'll come away wiser...maybe even faster!!

You said "AND", so it puffs white smoke on start up all the time, or just on start up during the winter? Cars will smoke a little in the winter, especially on start up. What you need to look for is see if it's smoking right now and how long it smokes, i.e., it goes away after 2 mins. or keeps smoking regardless. A compression test would also be a good idea, even though I've never done one on a car before I bought it because it just seems to me that the guy isn't gonna like you start pulling plugs and and stuff, but if he lets you, go for it. It will tell you a lot about how healthy the engine is.

Personally, I wouldn't pay $2,000 for a turbo car with almost 200,000 miles on the clock. I think around $1300-$1000 range would be better.

Also, I'm curious as to why the owner decided to install a T25 turbo on his car. Even if the stock 14b was shot, he could of just replaced it with another one. By bolting on the miniscule T25, he effectively downgraded his cars turbo setup. :notgood:

not sure why he did this and he didn't say why he used a T-25, the white smoke part was only during the winter and doesn't do it now

Try and find out if its had good mantince. Head been off vavle stem seals replaced things like that then go from there. my friend paid 3600 for a 90 awd everything was stock had 160k on it but the body was show room condition

900 dollars and no more. Like everyone else said, that's way too much for a motor with that many miles on it.

The T25 that he put on is smaller than the stock 14b that comes with a stock manual 1g.

I only paid 400 for my 91 laser with 138,000 miles on it so definately ask him to lower the price or keep looking elsewhere.
