Hello, first off I'm new here, and I'm not a DSM owner, but my younger brother is and I've joined the forum to try to help him out. His car is a stock 1995 Eclipse RS with the 420A. What do you recommend for the first mods? Nothing too expensive, he's only 18!

Also, things frequently are going wrong with the car (I understand DSMs aren't the most reliable vehicles). We live in Eastern Mass, does anyone know a mechanic who knows DSMs really well in the area? Our mechanic doesn't do a good job his car...

Finally, I'd like to say although I'm a Corvette driver, I'm not ignorant and do have respect for DSMs more than any other cars besides Chevys of course :) I appreciate that you guys generally put performance first instead of stupid body kits and stuff and that your cars are actually sports cars and not small family compact sedans (cough cough Honda cough) :p

Thanks in advance for the help everyone!

Well first I love my 420a. My Camaro is broke down and needs the bottom end rebuilt ; ). The 420a is a great lil engine to me. The first mods I did : cold air intake, header, and rest of the exhaust. There is a 420a mod list here on the forums . They are not hard to do and you can find stuff for fairly cheap. I would also suggest that you have your brother join and just start reading some of the things on this site. This is only my 4th post on this site because I simply just love reading and learning about my 420a. It would do him good if he did the same. There is a search up at the top where you/he can find just about anything.

id do all the general maintenance first oil/filter change, plugs maybe wires, check timing belt see if it has play, then cold air, header and catback exhaust. and when i ran 93 octane gas instead of the cheap stuff in my old 420 it ran better.

yeah maintenance is a must. do a compression test and timing belt check spark plugs ect. before you put mods on. but start with a header cold air intake bigger throttle body and exhaust. but that wont get him alot of hp unless you upgrade internally.

Unorthodox racing pulley
Get some good headers that will last you a long time (Megan Racing is good)

Throw on any cold air intake, maybe some MSD wires + ignition and he'll feel a nice difference for ~ $500 give or take

The next mod that I'm going to do to my 420a is the jeep tb . I can't wait till I get to do it. You can pick up 2 tbs from a local junk yard for like 80 bucks. combine the 2 and BAM.

Yeah I know you can't just "Throw it on" LOL. I don't mind doing a little bit of fab work. That's why I'm going to get 1 gs TB and get 1 jeep 4.0 TB. That way I can still keep my stock one on while I fab that thing up. It looked too simple for me not to do it. I had that bookmarked as well as 2GNT.com - 60mm_Jeep_Throttle_Body. Thanks for looking out. :rocks:
