Filter material for intake pipe?

I need to find something to use as a temporary filter element for a 4" intake pipe. I plan to run a steel screen over the end of the pipe to keep large objects out, and I had considered wrapping some pantyhose over the screen to keep dust, dirt, and bugs out. But I don't know how well pantyhose flows and/or filters. Anybody have any experience with using pantyhose like this, or does anyone have a better recommendation of a material/to use?

I have used them in offroad vehicles with success. Not sure if they will have the size you need but they have a bunch of different sizes
