Hey guys I just have a quick question. I am doing a through and through rebuild on my 98 GST. i just did a stock rebuild on the trans but while skimming Craigslist i ran across an ad for the same year trans with 80k on it. The guys is asking $450 and says it was in good working order before accident. Does this sound reasonable? I only ask because if I can talk him down a little I wouldn't mind having one around to build up for later on down the road. Another quick question is what Hp can our stocker 5 speed handle? Realistically I would like to be around 300-350ish fwhp, but like every build I do it NEVER gets done. I always add something else or try something new :p Its only finished when I sell it LOL. It's pretty safe to say this will end up on the track like the rest of 'em. Anyway thanks for the help and thanks for the rude comments (I know there coming) Chris

I've easily seen transmissions for far less than that picked up. If that's the shipped price, you can consider it. If you're picking it up, I wouldn't pay more that $300 cash personally. I just passed on a spare A/T for $250 just the other day. I have 3 of them as it is LOL.

"Fair Price" is in the eye of the beholder, as well as the area you are in. I would have to drive a few hundred miles and back to find a good trans at $450 or less. If I was in a hurry, about $400 is what I would pay. If I had time or it was no rush I would not go past $300.

FWD tranny are worth significantly less than AWD trannys; and auto are worth way less than manuals. I got this general rule from months of searching and scouring the marketplaces, craigslists, etc to try and find myself a decent tranny (Ended up getting a TRE Stage 2 barely used). So, that price seems okay, but you should try to get it around $250. The main reason being is unless he lets you rip it apart to see how the synchros, hubs, gears etc are then you have no way of knowing whether or not it is even a remotely reusable core let alone a usable tranny. Just my thoughts. GL :hellyeah:

+1 I was thinking the same thing. Before my rebuild I could've sold it as good running order even with bad syncro. So the census seems to be $250-$300 is ideal? This is no major concern I just figured if I could have a back up why not. How about the other questions? What is the stock 5 speed capable of handling? I just read a report here of a guy running 196+ mph one a one mile run with stock 5 speed.
