Thinkin about making myself a Custom Exhaust....

I really like "Side Exit" Exhausts that alot of built turbo cars have...

I was thinking of welding up a 3inch exhaust that came out infront of the back tire....

I want it loud as hell so i was thinking no muffler, but need cat for dumb emissions.

I've got a exhaust on my car now but its just not that loud. its loud-er but you can barely hear it compared to alot of other Modded Cars.

What do you guys think?

I think you would be better off making a cut out instead. You could keep the factory exhaust set up so you can keep law officials from giving you the stink eye and trying to pull you over. And when you get to the track, you can still have free flowing loud exhaust.

Warning! Opinion AHEAD!

Why do you want it Louder? Louder imports get pulled over more often, gives other DSMs a bad name, and do nothing other than slowly make you go deaf. Not to mention that on long drives you'll find that "Awesome" loud exhaust annoying and tiring. I get annoyed at the drone of my exhaust and it's Factory. Try to keep it reasonably quiet. The loundess is usually nothing more than posturing.

Could also either have an electric cutout installed. One other option would be to have somebody weld some flanges on your cat and then swap in a test pipe until you need to go for emissions.

Good point. My car is stupid loud thanks to a cheap muffler installed by the previous owner. I plan on quieting it down when I get to the point that nothing more important needs to be done. The droning is def. something to think about. If I drive my car the 35 minutes to work it can get a little tiresome.

My Cat is gutted actually, and I have a Emissions Delete <<<< (Neither done by me) XD I stilled passed Emissions. I was 40 HC (Hydrocarbons) under the limit which is 220 HC.

Sometimes the Emission Places also screw up. Friend has D16 Honda bone stock with 120k miles, went in for emissions and got 450HC (No joke) went in next day and only read 16 HC. pretty sure they ####ed up some how.

And I like Loud cars because i Enjoy Annoying my asshole neighbors, and it's fun at car meets because it sounds nice in Burnout Boxes.

Would just upgrading to a 3inch exhaust in general make it louder? I know itd help performance alot which is 3\4 the point. Mine is stock Diameter w\ Aftermarket Muffler welded to it.

I like my car being loud and i dont GAF. Exhaust tickets are wimpy anyways. On my 91 i have a custom 3 in downpipe, no car, just a section of pipe to a flowmaster muffler...that ends just about behind my drivers seat. I love it

If you did that in California (at least around where I live), you would get pulled over before you got home from the shop. You have to, or at least used to have to, take your car to a DMV referee and have them sign off on your exhaust being legal if you got a ticket for it around here.

Thats California They are natzee's when it comes to cars + Emissions.

Here, Emissions is easy to get around, and that's the only inspection they do.

Hell even if you fail Emissions, for 10$ a month you can still drive your car legally.

yea i know cali has some pretty strict emissions laws.

If you upgrade to a 3" it will help spool up of the stock turbo, but might induce turbo spikes and boost creep. (do supporting mods to accomadate.) It will sound ALOT louder. An Apexi exhaust flows nice, sounds great, but isn't terribly loud.

I'm all for being yourself, That's cool. The cut out would be better for days when you have a hang over and you really REALLY don't want to hear it. Not to mention it helps when you don't want to attract attention near the 15th and 30th of the month when offices go a patrolling.

Just a question, you do realize the reason they don't have a lot of cars with the exhaust ending RIGHT under the car is carbon monoxide, right? Carbon Monoxide can be cumulative when exposed constantly. Not busting your balls for your particular style, but the reason most modern cars do not have side exhaust is because people were dying from carbon monoxide poisoning when they were stopped and idling in the winter. :idontknow:

Other reason is if you have a back fire or unburnt fuel you could burn the underside of your car.

Not busting your balls, but offering a logical safety hazard.

How to get around Exhaust Noise Violation Tickets.

1: Claim your muffler Fell off (sometimes works)
2: Buy a cheap silencer or make something that looks like one, and stick it in your tailpipe, take a picture, then go to court and say you had a silencer installed. (always works) at least down here in TN, because the majority of the population is a bunch of inbred morons.

I hear what your saying. I personally didnt put it on the car, the guy before me did. I bought a brand new TR&D cat back but havent put it on. Need to either get an aftermarket downpipe or cut the 2.5" section and weld the flange on the 3"section and bolt it to my downpipe. Also my car isn't a DD. It damn sure aint reliable enough, also i dont drive it in the winter. I would also be more worried about CO in my house than the poisoning i could get at a stop light

Get an electric cutout. It's the greatest mod ever!! I run a 3" downpipe with Electric cutout that opens about a foot in front of the cat. Then I have a stock cat and stock cat back exhaust. I get the best of both worlds! Its super free flowing and loud as a bi*** when open. And stealthy quiet when closed. People are always surprised when I open the cutout..... Its LOUD like a big ass diesel truck.

Gah Damn, Gimme a write up or somethin!

I like having functional switches in meh car

And that actually seems like it works really well.

I'd like some more details on that

Sorry i dont have a write up on it. I made it custom. It was a 3.25" Chevy Colorado Electronic throttle body that I converted to a cutout. I welded in a 3" Y pipe and attached the throttle body to it.

What do you want an side exhaust? It's a waste of money when you clearly do not need it.

If I got a Side Exit Exhaust it would be purely home made using all 3" Stainless Steel Tubing. I am a fairly good welder. I don't think they sell those.

Another reason is I'm trying to recreate the sound that my buddy has on his freshly rebuilt GST.

He has a Fully stock exhaust on it (Minus header, and yes I count that as part of a exhaust system. Deal with it) but he unbolted the muffler where it makes kinda a lowercase "n" shape where it wiggles its way through the FWD's rear suspension, and it actually gives out this REALLY clean sound, and its actually pretty loud outside the car, but not super loud to the point where cops would give you a hassle about it. The reason being for him doing this was apparently it was and I quote "Stopped Up".

Tempting to me do this, but idk. I always talk shit about people who just cut the muffler off there car to make it louder, (usually the kinda of people who like chrome spinning hubcaps, and park benches on there trunk...) but how would it be any different from a 3" side exit exhaust? other then noise, and the 3" Side Exit would probably be 10 Times Louder. I hate my Shitty Mangaflow Auto zone Special muffler that's on there now.

What do you guys think of this whole situation? Don't care about peoples opinions a whole lot, but other times I do. It's not like I'd be um....slow. 20 PSI spanks a lot more then your typical Honda LOL; but I'm not so much about speed either, I just enjoy driving, but if its any kind of racing I like Road Racing (Lots of Turns N such.)

EDIT: That Electric cut out made of a TB...Kinda looks like something that would lose quite a bit of power, open or closed. ????

Well when its closed it is going though the stock cat/resonator/muffler. So YES it losses power that way, but when its OPEN its a straight 3" opening. That's how all cutouts are made. Its just a butterfly valve.

I think I'm just gonna chop off my muffler and sell it to some ricer and say it has a turbo built into it and he will make 500hp. and then just start welding up my 3" exhaust.

My car. Not yours!

Worrying about running lean due to lack of backpressure??

1: Turbo
2: Backpressure = half myth
3: does EFI mean anything to you.
4: I run so incredibly rich right now I highly doubt I'd see a negative effect from that.

AKA I'm not! :)

When ever I would throw my "Side Exit" Exhaust Idea out there around one of my friends he would tell me "you'll burn up your exhaust valves from lack of back pressure because of a short exhaust"

"Ferrari's, Toyota's, Porches's, Acura\Honda's, Lamborghini, Pagani, etc. All have mid\rear engined cars. They don't have much for exhaust systems. Length does not = back pressure.

Back Pressure and what it is\does, and what makes you lack or gain it has been so strechted, and miss told from the truth from people who think they know alot about cars, but really dont.

I've done my share of reading of Articles and such on back pressure, and some schooling. and I personally believe that Back pressure, isn't as big of a deal as it's made out to be with cars these days because unlike the cars that did suffer from burned up valves from running lean from lacking back pressure, they were carburated and could not self adjust there a\f Ratio unlike cars nowadays with EFI which is designed to do its best to have a good a\f ratio to accommodate current Emission standards and get the most efficiency out of your engine, and if it starts to lean a little, it increases over all fuel out put. if it runs rich, it will decrease that out put. Hence why we have MAF's, TPS, and other sensorish goodies. of course over time the accuracy and efficiency of all this starts to go kaput, seeing as from what I know alot of ECU's and Emission equipment is only made to work 90-100% right for about 100,000 Miles. after that things get worn, old, and just don't work properly.

this is stuff I have concluded personally, I don't SAY it is THE truth, but It's what I would like to believe is close to it.

the exhaust thats on mine is basically stock 2.5in awd exhaust with no cat or muffler. just the 2 factory resonators. sounds really good.
