Ok I just now started my car for the first time since I put a evo 316g on it and tubular headers that I painted and baked and did everything by the book. I started the car for like 25 seconds and the headers instantly got hot. I waited a min then started it back up and let it run for about a min and they started smoking and the paint started chipping. I don't know what temp the headers were but they were fairly hot to touch. Do headers get hot freakishly fast? Thanks in advance.

the headers are taking exhaust from the cumbustion chamber, so is fire hot? :sneaky: You should have wrapped them with heat wrap atleast since your taking off your heat covers.

What kind of paint did you use? And yes it will get hot its the exhaust LOL!! If it starts glowing red then you have a serious problem. But ya the exhaust gets hot pretty fast especially with a tubular manifold! The second you start the car it's seeing combustion exhaust make sense.

I used 2000°f header paint and I know that exhaust gets hot I'm not dumb.. I know how motors work, I just wanted to make sure that the header gets hot that quick? Its get hot to touch in just a gew seconds... so you would say that is normal, that quick? I'm picking up a infrared thermometerright now so I will get temps within the next 30 mins or so. Thanks for the reply.

Ya it can get really hot really fast. Which is probably why the paint didn't stick and is cracking off. You have a stainless steel tubular manifold? Its probably to smooth a surface for the paint to stick then add the heat and it just falls off. Anyway if it is for some reason really really high then you have a problem for sure maybe in the tune or a leak causeing a lean condition making the exhaust gas hotter i don't know. Is this the first start up with the new turbo? What are you tuning? What else did you do?

Yeah first start up with turbo. I got an o2 dump housing, 16g fed from initialnd a stainless header. No tune yet just stock boost for now. I got an Aem failsafe afr and Aem tru boost that I am hooking up tomorrow. I pretty much put everything together for a test fit and going to tear it all back down and wrap the headers and do a few other things. once i do get rdy to up the boost i willget bigger injectors, pump, and afpr. I am going with ceddy software or whatever since i got the 98 black box. I did put the thermometer on it and it only reached 7xx°f so there is no problem with heat, i was just nervous about the initial startup. This is my first time working on turbo cars and I just never realized the header got instantly hot. Thanks again for all the help!

Ya for sure just be carful running the car untuned and on stock fuel system. Even with low boost the evo3 flows a lot more than the stock t25. You could possible hit fuel cut very easy if not carfull, just a thought to keep in mind. Also since you just did so much to the turbo and ic setup I would highly recommend doing a boost leak test. Just incase you didn't get a clamp on tight enough or something else is causeing a small leak. I always do them when I work around the turbo or piping and also do it as a regular pm on all my cars, just something to make a habit with a turbo car.

I already did a boost leak test with a tester I made for 5$! I found out my throttle body shaft seals were bad so I already rebuilt that and put it back on. I've done numerous upgrades to this car all at once from coilovers to axles and head unit to all new speakers, she has been tore down for a couole weeks. I'm not even gonna drive the car til I start tuning, like I said I was just test fitting everything and doing a little startup for the heck of it. I just get bored waiting on parts to arrive! I do everything the right way, I don't want to mess up anything. If I do end up driving the car it will be just to move it in and out of the garage.

It could for some odd reason be running real lean. My old 2g gsx ran real lean after 2 races back to back my manifold was glowing red hot. Did you check for boost & exhaust leaks after the install. Paint chipping could be due to poor prep work. No offence this happen to my honda when i painted my header.
