Vee,
So i've been searching and trying to decide which exhaust to get for my car. The best choices i have seen are from apexi and megan racing for a 3 inch turbo back ...I still have the stock turbo on my car but planning to upgrade soon. Anyway i already have a 3 inch exhaust in the car from the previous owner but where the secondary O2 sensor is they decided to cut the stock pipe and weld it on the now cut 3 inch pipe wit a restriction right at the O2 sensor ... i dont know why they could not afford to drill a hole and weld on a 5 dollar O2 threads on anyway getting off topic...

Which exhaust would you guys recommend??? ... The megan racing has a resignator i noticed...im wondering if the resignator is still 3 inches or does it downsize a bit ??? Also wondering if the apexi or megan racing exhaust rattle since it might not have enough clearance if it wasnt designed properly... Your much needed input would be much apreciated... Thank you in advance... XD

Im also open to other brands , those 2 are just the ones that caught my eye the most

just to double check ... i looked at pictures for this set up and it seems like it would work since the megan downpipe is a 2 bolt flange and the catback for the thermal starts off wit a 2 bolt flange as well then switches it up to 3 bolt at the muffler flange... please verify XD

Make sure that if you are going to buy the Megan DP, that it is the most recent revision. There have been a few of them - just as ndtsi was trying to explain with totating his flange. Check this out:

This is page 16 of the thread and it will give you pictures of the differences. The flange at the o2 housing has a new angle on it so it will mate up without a hassle anymore, and the catback flange was re-clocked.

Personally, I would buy the newest revision of the MR Downpipe and the Thermal R&D Catback, cut every flange off, except at the o2 houising, and weld on V-Band Flanges - They are SO much easier to use. It may cost you a bit more money to track down flanges and possibly void your exhaust's warranty, but unless your exhaust rusts completely through and falls out from underneath your car, you shouldn't need to redeem any part of your warranty.

Good luck with whatever path you choose for this modification.

If I remember correctly I had to cut off my thermal flange and have it rotated to fit with the megan downpipe (but that was a few years ago since I did that). Yes, the thermal does have a 3 bolt at the muffler flange.

Trust me you will be more than happy with the thermal exhaust! It produces a nice tone at idle and sounds awesome at higher RPM.

Just tried to elaborate on what you were talking about with your DP. And x2 on the Catback! I can't wait to buy mine!

ok so let me get this straight ...just verifying once again...if you buy the new oversion of the megan racing downpipe there's no need for any modifications it straight bolts on to the thermal catback ???

First question...did I miss, anywhere in this thread, where you stated whether your car was FWD or AWD?? It's REALLY going to make a difference.

Second thing; Not quite. Thermal R&D products are kind of in a league of their own, so they are a bit different then the rest of the systems for our cars. Being that Thermal is ONLY a Catback exhaust, there are a few pieces of info that you need to consider about it, as well as, Megan Racing's DP. The first version of the MR downpipe had plenty of fitment problems (Bolt holes not bored big enough, poor flange angles for transition from the o2 housing, and poorly clocked flanges at the cat). It was also a full 3" DP. The second version corrects these issues. The flange at the o2 housing is re-angled to fit properly. It's also been resized to 2.5" to fit the STOCK o2 housing, and from there, opens up to a full 3" cat-deleting downpipe.

The Thermal Catback necks down to fit the STOCK cat, and then opens to a full 3" exhaust. Therefore, NO, it is not a perfect fit. There will be some modificaion involved to either product depending on what you are doing.

That's why I suggest incorporating V-Band flanges into your exhaust system, or anyone's for that matter. The only exception for this is at the exhaust housing on your turbo. It will depend on your turbo, obviously, but if you have a Mitsu exhaust housing, then just stick with a conventionally flanged setup for this part of the system. Sure, V-Band flanges will take a little more time and money (Not too much so don't freak out) to install, but the results will be worth it. If you ever have to remove and re-install your exhaust in the future, for any reason, it will seriously take you MINUTES to do so. Also, doing most of the work yourself (or having a friend who's a very capable welder) will save you quite a bit of money.

Exhaust systems are very simple. They can cost you anywhere from $250 - $1200. They just take some enginuity, and whether or not you want to DIY or buy something premade is up to you. The reason I asked you, above, whether your car is FWD or AWD is because if you are doing it yourself, it's going to take a little more to get you past the fuel tank (FWD's have a conventional tank and your exhaust's bends will relfect that by maneuvering around it. AWD's have saddle-bag tanks and the exhaust piping will run right underneath/through it). I, personally, will probably be doing it myself. The only things that I need to make sure of is that my system is a full 3" turbo back, it's completely made out of stainless steel, and it sounds as close to the Thermal Catback system as possible. The V-Band setup will be for my convenience.

Just keep this in mind when considering an exhaust setup for your car. Turbo's HATE backpressure so, the general rule of thumb is, the bigger the better AND eliminate as many bottle necks as possible;).

so i've been searching the web and i came across the VRS turbo back exhaust...i was wondering if anyone had this system and how it sounded

I personally have the apex downpipe and catback and am seriously thinking of swapping it with the megan system on my gsx. The apex downpipe starts of at 2.25 inches whille the megan downpipe starts at 2.75 inches. The apex catback has a bunch of small angles in the exhaust while the megan catback is alot straighter. Not to mention the megan is stainless...

im aware of that but i wonder if the resignator on the megan exhaust is smaller diameter and the muffler as well...and also is the megan exhaust "raspy" ??? or does it sound relatively good WTF!!

Check out youtube, man. They have all kinds of exhaust clips for DSM's. All you have to do is type in: DSM and the name of the system you are trying to hear. Happy hunting.:thumb:

check out the *SRS exhaust on ebay, i got it for $200 shipped and it comes with 2 resonators, sounds as good as the thermal, but half the price, just my .02
