Hey All,

I'm new to the DSM scene, just picked up a Plymouth Laser RS AWD, pretty sure it's a 1993. I'm swapping out the tranny as it's pooched and I've found a good driveline from a '95 Talon.

I've done many a searches and so far all looks like it'll work no prob, but I'm looking for some peace of mind hearing that from the experts.

The differences I've found are between the 6 and 7 bolt trannies, but I'm planning on swapping in the whole new (used) drivetrain, engine and tranny, so I assume that shouldn't matter.

Does anyone see any problems with this approach? I have yet to find anything that says it won't bolt in, and I assume all electrical and such is the same as well and should work??

Thanks for your time and efforts all, looking forward to getting another DSM back in action!!!

Provisions for the front and rear roll stop mounts are not on the 2g 7bolt block. It's not a simple bolt in affair.

You have a lot of reading to do my friend. The reason you can't find info on swapping a 2g drivetrain into a 1g is that no one bothers with it. The electrical is similar, but not the same. Unless you are getting one hell of a deal, it would be cheaper and easier to buy another 1g transmission

you need to use the tranny according to the engine, there is too much work into interchanging them and its simply not worth it. throw a 6-bolt in it with the proper transmission.

Wow so much misinformation in just a few posts. There are no 6 bolt or 7 bolt trannies. Only 1g or 2g. 2g will work in either but a 1g only works in 1g. It all has to do with the mounts. The bellhousing is slightly different in a 2g but it will bolt up to either 6 or 7 bolt motors in a 1g. 2g drivetrain does not swap into a 1g. Only the tranny and some year transfer cases will work. The motor from a 2g does not bolt into a 1g. 7 bolt does not refer to 2g. It is both 93-94 1g and all 2g. They are not the same however. Just both have the same 7 bolt crank, rods etc. Block itself is quite different.

So....your 2g donor is not a very good candidate.

No shots but guys...the above three posts above mine are not completely correct...why not use a 2g tranny? It works in a 1g just fine. doesn't interchange? Yes it does. 2g engine in a 1g? No. 7 bolt motors? Sure, just not from a 2g. 93 awd would've originally had a 7bolt. It's not a big deal. People make a big deal out of 6 bolts, the choice is up to the owner. I've had both.

i remember reading a writeup that another tuner did. he took a 5spd from a 2g and put it in his 1g. one of thing s that he had to do was modify his linkages for the shifter cables. (bend/twist for different motion) this may be something that you might look for having to address

Seriously who let the nooblets run free on this post. Yes you can use a 2g transmission in a 1g. The 1g transmission will not bolt up into a 2g chassis because the transmission has 1 place to bolt a body mount where as the 2g trans has 3 places to mount into the engine bay. If you use the 2g transmission in a 1g you will still use your 3 stock motor mounts and the 1 mount for the transmission just like stock. You will also have to use the matching transfer case for that transmisson. Just make sure you get your spline count right on the tcase to trans because there are a 21 22 and 23 spline tcase to transmission output shaft. We are doing this to my friends 1gA because its a cheap alternative to buying a built 1g trans and it is stronger in stock form then a 1g trans. The 4 bell housing bolts line up the same. I think you have to use the same transfer case count from your 1g to the 2g for it to work properly with your rear end but I would like some clairification on this if anyone knows?

Incorrect. There are only 22 and 23 spline versions. 22 on 90 only. They do interchange if you change the output shaft of the tranny. 90-96 5spd are all the same ratio tcase. Auto is different. 97 up is also different. If you use a 2g 97up 5spd you have to use a 97 up tcase or change the gears inside the 97 up tranny. Autos are completely different cases and ratios and for the sake of most discussions they are not covered in this thread.

it is stronger in stock form then a 1g trans
Also not correct, at least not completely. Many of the parts are the same depending on year. 90 and 90 only uses a different diameter intermediate shaft inside and is generally considered inferior. 91 up all use the same diameter intermediate shaft although gear pitch changes depending on year. 93 up use a different 3/4 that is generally considered weaker in the hub and have been known to split at higher HP levels, guessing 400 plus if I recall.

It doesn't read like you did any research at all.

Among other major questions: Why would you put a 7-bolt.. a '95 7-bolt no less in a 1G? :hmm:

A "1993" could've had a 1G head-ed 7 bolt, but with 1G style oil squirters and thrust system as well. But the cars from late 92-94 I've personally wrenched on all had a variety of combinations in them. Check the date in the door frame.
