i have a 95 esi, a few days ago i was driving and the engine just stalled and never started since, i did a compression test and got near 60 pounds in the 2nd cylinder, im guessing im gonna need to replace my rings, but why would the car just cut out, would the car just shut itself off to prevent damaging anything else, can i reset this and at least get it running to see whats goin on

Well, it probably cut out because you ran lean and melted the piston top. I have been there and done that on my original engine. With 60 compression in cylinder 2 you might get it to start but if it does it will sound nasty, trust me, I drove mine on the tow truck with a melted piston. You really dont need to know anything else the fact that you have 60 compression in cylinder 2 means you need to rebuild regardless. If you melted a piston or fried your rings you really dont want ot run the car much and take a chance of damaging your cylinder walls.

I have to agree with this. There is a bit of need to figure out what caused this situation, but shit happens. Do you have any modifications?

To give you some idea, the service limit (lowest compression number you can have and still drive the car, per the factory service manual) is 100psi. Normal is around 180-200psi. So, in that one cylinder, you are only making a third as much compression as you should. Insufficient compression translates into no power. Why? Because the explosion is getting past the piston into the block instead of pushing the piston down like it should.

If you're only seeing 60psi in that cylinder, it's all kinds of f*cked up. Time to either pop for forged internals or look up the Parts Dinosaur, imo.
