Ok, so after a few days of running the talon hard, I have now developed a knocking noise from the head area of the engine. It was faint at first and could only be heard under acceleration above 3k. But know it is very noticeable and i can duplicate the noise while vehicle is not moving by just reving the engine. What do you guys think? Time for a new shortblock? New head?

Knocking like a hard rap? of a tapping noise. If you have a hard knock in the head area and you have been running hard, I'd pull the valve cover and give it a once over. Possible thrown rocker? Then you would have an associated engine miss at all times.

Knock from lower end when floating the engine could be a rod. You could have wrist pin damage or pin boss damage. If you can't find it in the head, a tear down and inspect may be in store for you.

If you run hard, then higher maintenance levels are required. Good oil, fresh coolant etc. And still there's no guarantee. These are old engines. Unless you have a fresh motor, you run the risk of this very thing.

Good Luck

Sounds like a rod bearing to me. You may have had some detionation going on and pounded a rod bearing out.

Not really a miss in the engine still seemed to run ok. I did a log on it and now I have massive amounts of knock showing on my log on the same boost that yesterday I had none. Whats my first step? Pulling the valve cover? Pulling the head?

hope you find it there. i would check the external of everything and make sure that everything is tight and not just a rattle you hear. else...

Yea spun rod bearing, had it happen to me. Same exact symptoms. Quickest way to check for rod bearing failure is to remove the sparkplug wire from the cylinder closest to the driver side of the car(forgot their order), I am almost willing to put money on that being the offending cylinder, rev it up see if it still knocks, if it does repeat this process for the rest of the cylinders. If it doesnt you have found which rod bearing spun.

Little longer way to do this is to drop your oil pan and wiggle your rods, does one wiggle? thats the one that spun. Time for a rebuild my friend.

update:

Removed 1 spark plug wire at a time while under load. Knock does not go away on any cyluinder. Pulled valve cover. Nothing out of the norm that I can tell. What do you guys think? My personal thoughts are some bad bearings because when I pulled the valve cover there where some small shavings of metal in the oil.

any new thoughts?

small silver shavings, maybe a couple, looked almost like maybe some threads from when i took the spark plug out or something. Anyone close that wants to come a listen to it??? Im in the pocono's in Pa.

What do you mean by "floating the engine"??

Well if you have the time, I would drop the pan. I had some knocking which sounded like it was coming from the head, it ended up being a rod bearing. I hope that's not your problem but it doesn't look good.
