ECU gone bad? Help!

Hello all. I've been having problems with my 95 Eclipse dying for no apparent reason for a while now. At first it seemed fuel-related. You could restart the car after it had died. THEN, after having new injectors put in, you could not restart the car after it died for anywhere between 5 and 15 minutes. NOW sometimes you can restart it and sometimes you can't.

I took it to my regular mechanic and they could not find anything wrong. I then took it to the dealer and THEY could not find anything wrong. Then finally I got the name of a mechanic in my area, took it to him, and he ran a test that said my ECU was bad. Cost for replacement = $750.

Questions:

1. Does the ECU sound like the culprit to you?

2. Can I install an ECU myself? I'm a relative newbie. Have rebuilt an entire VW, but nothing this sophisticated. I'm thinking I might be able to find one in a junkyard or something.

3. Any other options?

you can definately find a cheaper used ecu... look around.

putting in the ecu is simple, a matter of hooking up everything the way it was before.

Seeing as he doesnt know to much about these cars i doubt he knows where to look for an ECU or he might have done so already. You can find a good amount of parts for your car at www.DSMtrader.com . You can find them from 50$-250 depending on weather you get an EPROM or not. if you are leaving it stock you dont need an EPROM. Also if you decide to do it your self the ECU is located behind/under the radio. It has three plastic connectors going into it. I believe at www.vfaq.com you can find a picture explained diagram of how and where to replace the ECU. Good luck hope that will fix it

Thanks for the info, guys. I'll start looking into doing it myself. Already dropped about $2500 into this car... need to save $$$ to upgrade my new Ralliart.

BTW, will an EPROM from a 2G turbo work on my GS?

Different engines, different ECU's. Not compatable.

Dont know why it does this but it does.... If your ecu smells like fish it's probably fried out.

That's the smell of leaking acid eating throught you circuit board.
