An auction on ebay for a Palm lllc states that it's missing the software and stylus. I know I can get a stylus anywhere, but what about the software. I have the feeling that this is a stupid question because nowadays you can download entire OS's. So, maybe the better question would be, where can I get a copy of the software?

The newest version of palm desktop is on palm's webpage for your handheld.
You also need to get a multiplex engineering interface with palm n stien or OBD guage if you are taking the cheaper route.
I would recomend getting pocketlogger cable and software however.
Don't bother with the elm323 interfaces on ebay, they are deceptivly v1 and will not work! You need v2 to run palm n stien or OBD gauge.

I am assuming you have a 2g...

Good assumption, I do have a 2g.

Back up here a bit.. I can barely understand what you're telling me (to no fault of your own).

If i can decipher what you're saying, you're telling me that once I get the Palm...
First, obviously get the latest version of Palm's OS, correct?
Second, I need to order Pocketlogger (your recommendation) and that will come with a cable to hook up to my diagnostic port?
Then I'm pretty much done, correct?

From the ebay item description you are talking about, its sounds like it doesn't come with the PC software cd. I don't know of a way you can take the palm OS off of the palm without reflashing the chip or removing the eprom...

The cheapest you can get a 2g logger for is around $80. You need to buy the multiplex engineering T16 interface to use with your palm. Once you have that you need to install palm n stien software or OBD guage on the palm.

The best route is to just buy pocketlogger because the software isn't buggy like either of the above programs and has more features and is updated as both above are also out of development.

You can't really build your own cable for a 2g unless your OK with making circuits, there was a guide for making a circuit with an ELM323 chip but it has disappeared...most likely becausue the ELM chip doesn't really play nice with either of the palm softwares available and the schematic is already on ELM's homepage!

The DIY cables here are for 1g because they don't have OBDII.

Yea.. after a bit of research I found that it'll cost at LEAST $85 to be able to datalog. I think it'd be best to just buy the Pocketlogger cable/software for $125... Hell, that's $50 cheaper then it was a few years ago according to some of the posts I've read.
