So I couldnt find a review on ebay cold air intakes so I just thought id ask for your guys' opinion. I know that its cheap and its ebay but it has to be less restrictive than OEM. Besides it would only be temporary until i get something better.

to me a pipe is a pipe. I have had an A.E.M and the cheap ebay ones both on my eclipse and really no difference. like already said get a k&n cone air filter and you are good. Ebay cold air intake FTW!
 
Ya I agree...a pipe is a pipe..I got am eBay one..has some blemishes but does the job, wouldn't trust the filter they send with it though

Colby has data logs to prove you wrong over which sucks more air (v2 vs ebay CAI) A pipe may be a pipe, but pipe coating to protect vs heat, and pipe routing to stay away from heat soak as well as quality (smooth pipe surface) are all factors to consider

a pipe is a pipe but the aem ones have been proven to gain 7-10hp

At the end of the day, if you want a little extra, pipe + good filter is the cheapest way and will work well. If you value every little bit of whp (also depends on budget and how much you are willing to spend for 1-2whp) than a proven set up from aem, or something custom is the way to go.

If you're going to buy one later that's better, just buy the better one you have in mind if you have the cash for it. No point in buying twice.

I agree for the most part, depending on how cheap you can get one. My first short ram cost me $5. I did eventually upgrade to an AEM SRI, and from there now have a V2. I do not regret having 3 intakes, as I said, the first one was $5 hard to beat that, and I will switch from the v2 (for summer) to the SRI (for winter or extremely heavy long periods of rain) But at the same time, unless you are in a similar situation I say save your money and get the one you want. While I did say that you will gain 1-2whp with a proven/custom intake your 'butt dyno' wont be able to notice the difference
 
The biggest k&n that will fit is best but any really will do. After all it's not a turbo so your really can choke it with a small filter. Just get a k&n roughly the same size as the cheap ass filter they send with the pipe.
 
AEM/ K&N filters are about the same price, and both very good filters. I prefer AEM just to the fact that you don't have to oil them to clean them (not sure if k&n has a dry flow design yet or not haven't researched) but either way you will be good.
 
I see no harm in the shorter pipe. The longer one goes close to the floor right? I don't buy the whole "cold air" thing. Also with the filter being moved lower I would worry about sucking up water from puddles. Not worth the worry. The short hard pipe is better than stock.
 
I assume you are talking a short ram intake vs a cold air intake. As fugitive said. With the filter closer to the ground, you risk hydro lock, but the colder air you are sucking in the more power you get, so the further the way the better in that case. There is actually many threads on short ram vs cold air, just search.

The 7-10 HP gain is for turbo models. Gotta say, after reading that article, I'd be skeptical to invest money into those kinda of results. I'm a little shocked.
A drop-in K&N filter might provide the same results. But, for sure, that'd be less cool :D
 
Ohhhh, ok, that makes more sense then. On a side note for the OP, a cold air intake won't fit (to my knowledge anyway) with a turbocharger kit on the 420a
 
The filter design is the important thing to the HP gains. Most pipes will be exactly the same design. Its the filter that makes the difference. Friend at UTI had a dyno day where they just changed out the different filters on the same intake pipes & the expensive types had bigger HP gains. Buy it & get a nice K&N you will be happy
