Well after much deliberation thanx to all the choices out there, my DSM mentality kicked back in. Best price w/out sacrificing quality. Found this baby on e-bay. Total was around $150 shipped and it included all the gaskets and hardware. 2.5" neck down to 3" after flex and reduces back to 2.5" all mandral bent. I know the flames about the reduction at the end, but I'll be slapping on a HKS Carbon TI setup that is only 60mm in diameter. To counter this I'll be hacking into this downpipe and installing a 3" electronic downpipe. The quality however is superb and came as a pleasant surprise. Anyways, here are a few pics:

that downpipe from ebay looks pretty good.. except i was hoping it would be a full 3" even before the flex.. and yes the flex section is kinda small.. but the price is great.. even for stainless steel.. i was planning to get my own 3" o2 housing with external dump.. but if its 2.5 before the flex.. dont know how that would work. and the search for the cheapest, high quality build downpipe continues..

the 2 foot or so of 2.5" dp before the flex will probably effect nothing as far as HP gains or losses... unless you intend to hog out your head, intake, exhaust manifold, turbo exhaust manifold, and 02 housing all to flow the same as a mandrel bent 3" pipe, wich borders on impossable... i doubt it will make little if any difference whatsoever..

2.5" is most i'll be doing, so that's fine. however, I need something to mate to a cat, and this has built-in testpipe, should I just have the ebay one hacked up to fit the cat, or is there something else?

The exhaust depot one looks good, but it's more money, and I need cheap.... :/

ok, i think i'll be ordering the one on ebay... I like the price of the mild steel one, $125, but is it really inferior to the $175 full steel one? is the $50 worth it? I'm so broke from DSM problems...

My plan is to get this, remove my stock cat, and eventually probably put in a hi-flow cat.

I'm only doing a 2.5" exhaust system, I prefer a more silent performance unless its the turbo, heh :)

thx for the help on here

I dont believe the mild steel will be any worse than the stainless version. Alot of other exhaust systems out there are made of the same material. My Apexi dunk exhaust was and during the 2-3 years I had it on my car it never rusted or showed signs of deteriation. As for the debate between 3" and 2.5" b4 the flex, it's actually somwhat of a draw. At that stage of the exhaust track, heat still plays a high role in it's ability to move. So:

2.5" = higher exhaust temps, lower volume

3" = lower exhaust temps, higher volume

I'm not sure if anyone has scientifically proven numbers to back this theory, but I've had experiance with both setups:

Stock downpipe, stock cat, Apexi Dunk (3")

2.5" to 3" downpipe, stock cat-back (~2.25")

Honestly the power difference is minimal. I've compared this to running against a friend's car. Granted it was two separate nights w/ different temps and conditions, but it wasn't like a huge amount of difference between the two runs. A more flowing exhaust is always useful when u get higher up the modding tree, but even at this point where my peak airflows reaching 1500-1600 karmans (Hz) at 15 psi it's not making a day and night difference. I'm not stating facts here, just personal experience.

this "e-bay" pipe eliminates the cat all together. the downpipe itself is as log as a normal pipe + cat is.. so the pipe bolts directly to the cat-back exhaust.. there is no cat.. only zool..

really.. just get a test pipe, straight pipe.. whatever its called on ebay. They bolt-on directly. It just depends if you want 3" or 2.5". Hi flo cat for 150.00 or a test pipe for 30.00?? hmmmmm same results performance wise i think.

because I'm a treehugger:shhh:

anyway, I'd rather have a cat and the decreased performance than get caught without one and pay some enormous fine. besides, i'm not going for all out performance on my car anyway, so it don't matter if i have a cat or not.

.

the downpipe extends all the way to the cat-back (ie. eliminates the cat)

besides, i've seen hi-flow cats for a lot less than $150..... and we do have emissions testing

I know there is not cat, I'm going to run it cat-free until I HAVE to put one on, since we do have emissions testing, but I can probably get away with it since my car is a very low emissions vehicle and the mechanic gets a lot of business from my DSM, heh.

And yes, I am all for clean emissions, even at the sacrifice of some performance...

Other way around, this makes it louder :shhh: On a more serious note what it allows u to do is exit the exhaust gasses much earlier in the exhaust track. Basically u could have a 3" downpipe (such as the one above), electronic cut-out, and stock exhaust. While closed u'll have a stock sounding and looking car. When open it's equivalant to a 3" or greater exhaust. Sleeper I believe is what they call it. Or if you're like me and have a bling bling 2.25" exhaust, it allows me to utilize my larger turbo when called for.

i should email the guy selling the downpipes on ebay.. and tell him to make full 3" o2 eliminator turbo-backs.. :).. and maintain the good price.. that should give competitors something to think about.. to lower their prices.. means better for us consumers :)

Pacesetter makes a coated full 3" downpipe for less than $200. mixed reviews though, about 50/50, but there are a lot of good reviews on it.

"Our DPs have a 2 1/2" stainless steel first bend with a 2 1/2" stainless steel flex section. They then expand to 3" right after the flex section right under the oil pan area. Why start out at 2 1/2"? If you are running on the stock O2 sensor housing, even ported it is 2 1/2" inside diameter. When the exhaust gasses are hot, they flow better, 2 1/2" is plenty for the first 12". As the gasses cool , bigger helps. By going to 3" after the flex section, we allow this expansion and also allow for better clearance at the front where room is tight. From there they are a full 3" back to the Apex 3" flange with 14 gauge aluminized steel piping. We had some Apexi flanges laser cut out of thick 1/2" steel for a good seal and fit. "

you dont need a full 3" downpipe unless your pushin major HP's

just got mine in today.

it's the stainless steel one. looking back at it now, I probably should have just gone with the coated mild steel one. at least I don't have to worry about it ever rusting though.

Quick question for you guys with this ebay downpipe. Will it bolt up to the stock exhaust location or is it longer? Because if it is suppose to be a knock-off apexi downpipe, it would only fit apexi/RSR exhausts because the downpipe is longer and meant to fit the shorter piping from the Apexi/RSR exhausts only. Anyways, mine old downpipe from AHP took a beating today and I need a new one and for the price, the ebay downpipe sound good. The thing is, I have Greddy's Power Extreme for my gst and was wondering if it will bolt right up or not? If it does bolt up to the stock cat-back location then it would but does anybody have this downpipe bolted on a different exhaust rather than Apexi/RSR? Please let me know, thanks!
