Ok... im new to this site and thought this was the place to start the thread.. I know DSMs having a problem with squeeling belts, and I have been chasing this problem for over a year. Iv done my research and tried everything. On a cold start my belts will squeel and i know for a fact its something that has to do with my alternator/belt/ pulleys. I have singled out that much. Iv ran all the belts seperatly and the only one that would squeel is the alternator. And when i have my system turned up or flip on my lights it will occur. This problem usually only occurs during start up and when ideling cold (30 sec- 1 min). I have tried getting new belts (5 times) readjusting tension, testing alternator, spinning free pulleys, and still cant figure out the problem. The only thing i can think of is when i had my timing belt and water pump replaced the water pump pulley was put on backwards which is a common problem from what i hear. So is it possible that from running the belt on a backwards pulley for about a week or two it misaligned the pulley or slightly bent it? The pulley is on the right way and has been for about a year. I need to seriously figure this out soon..:banghead: Not fun having a very beautiful car that has tons of money in it and embarrising myself every start up. Please help!!!!

Candle wax on the friction side of the belt works.
 
Make sure your rubber disc on the crankshaft pulley isn't separating form the metal itself. If its bad it develops enough play to slightly loosen the belt as it spins. You don't want this totally failing on you either. The cheap Doorman pulleys do hold together for more than a few thousand miles.. It's OEM or Fluidampr (or the elusive ATI pulley). This can be one cause of your squealing. Could be an alt bearing going bad. PS pump bearing could be bad. Could as be a misaligned pulley.

Ill check out my crankshaft tomorrow, how can you tell if the PS pump is bad? I did recently notice that there is a little bit of fluid coming out of the top of it but that just happened so i dont think that would be the problem. The ALT was tested and the bearing seemed fine. If it is the pulley where can I buy a new set?
 
My alternator tested just fine numerous times, but when i would put a load on acc's it would squeal. Id have to give it a hard rev for it to go away. Eventually the squeal one day just would go and come back and stayed for good. A few hours later it ended up dying.

Trust! its your alternator thats weak. Replace it with a friends, or a known good one and watch it not even squeal upon start ups or when turning on acc;s.
 
My problem was the bottom bolt for the alternator egged out the hole in the bracket. This caused lots of problems as you can imagine. I even drilled the hole bigger and used a larger bolt and it worked for a bit, but the squeal came back. So I switched to the jay racing relocation kit and problem solved.

AHHH which also reminds me i had the same problem too with the pivot bolt for the alternator being lose causing the squeal as the alternator is grounded by the block. Defiantly check that out.
 
I have a 97 gst that has the same exact problem....until today my tensioner pulley for my alt belt blew up on me :rolleyes: I ordered a new one so when i replace mine ill let ya know if it fixed it or not.
 
I tried the wax, didnt work. So my only options are to buy a new alternator and see. Or i was thinking that grease is getting on the belt, but I dont see any signs when i take the belt off. New alternator, New pulleys, or just try to locktight everything and make sure nothing is loose. Im going crazy...:notgood:

I'd be willing to bet you need a new harmonic balancer. I replaced my alternator and belts and the squealing was still there... I replaced the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) and havent heard it since. It squeals when the rubber between the crank pulley seperates from age and deterioration
 
I tried that and it squeels when alt belt is on, .. alternator or pulleys it looks like..
I looked at the crank and it looked good to me for some reason it wont let me upload though i will try later, is there a kit for pulleys i could search i havent had any luck on finding any. Or any other troubleshooting i could do... im about to loose my mind

Also everytime I take off the belt and put it back on the squeel goes away for about a day or a few hours later.. I get excited but everytime it comes back :banghead: I was looking and im not sure if the alt belt on the water pump is suppose to be flush to the pulley but on the left side of the belt it seems to be upwards and the right side is flush to the metal edge of the pulley..

I stumbled accross that yesterday, and i compared it to mine. The notches are fine and the rubber isnt seperating, not sure if it makes a difference if i take it off or not but it looks completly fine to me.
