dsm buyer questions.

Well as of today i drove a 1990 eclipse gsx with 164kms. It has the 2g talon turbo, headers, intake, big bov, exhaust and cams. I have been researching these cars a whole lot and was wondering what i should look for when buying one. Timing belt was changed last 10xxxkm. Didnt notice anything wrong except for it needs a new starter.

Well do a compression test on it and see what the compression is.Check the turbo for shaftplay.160k miles is a bit high,but the motor should be a 6bolt no crankwalk problem with it.The 2g turbo sucks its a t25 very small I dont know why someone would but one of those on it opposed to a stock 14b.If its a good price and clean I would get it

Well he was selling it for 2000 o.b.o. i offered him 1300. has no stereo, interior could be in better shape.. he took the offer without negotiating. cause we told him i have to buy over a 1g in parts including new tires. My dad also notice when we stepped on it and gave it some gas it will smoke white (not a whole lot ) but there is some. I will be check the oil for foam or smell to see if it is a head gasket. ( i have yet not picked it up yet ) so need as much help.

Car is also not insured, so only got to test drive it a couple blocks. performance seemed fine though.

The smoke could be coming from the turbo but definately check all those over as well.

+1 on the turbo smoking. T25's are good for blowing white smoke. Do a leakdown test when you get the car and hope it's not a headgasket. Either way, I think that is a good buy as long as you didn't hear any excessive knocking. Welcome to the DSM world, your gonna be on this site more than you are in your car

It could be the seals in the turbo, but thats an easy fix...16g! Your best bet is to do all, and I mean ALL routine maintenance before any sort of upgrades (besides the 16g because you do not have to run it hard and you prob need a turbo anyway). These cars have such bad reps for being troublesome because people think they can beat the crap out of a turbo vehicle and have it run forever. Then they dont replace things and say "DSM's are unreliable".

Change plugs/wires
T-stat/Radiator cap
Oil/Filter/Oil cap
Air Filter

These things should get you wel on your way to a healthy running 4g63. Some of the things listed do not always need to be replaced, but all that stuff can be had for under $100 and in my book I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing how and when all of it was replaced.
