so i wouldn't really say this is a problem but i was curious.
me and my buddy both have 1gens with balance shafts removed and the motors kinda whine, not in a bad way. i can only relate the noise to is that it kinda sounds like a gear drive you you put on timing gears for a V8.
i figured it was coming from our pumps since they are gear driven and the sound is more potent since there is a stubby shaft instead of a balance shaft.

i just recently did the BSE and the i noticed it as soon as i drove. i've only heard it on 4g63's with no balance shafts. anyone else notice a difference in engine noise after a BSE.

p.s. my car revs like a N/A now:thumb: no balance shafts FTW

After my balance shafts where removed I didn't really hear a diffrence in engine noise. What i did notice was a slight more vibration and a little quicker rev. But then again its hard to hear anything from the engine bay with a full 3'' Buschur exhaust.

When I put my new motor in with everything new and B/S removed I have a whinning noise too. I have been trying to figure out where it was coming from. I know is not the waterpump because I have replaced it already and it made no diff. I also thought it was the oil pump but it didnt seem it was hurting anything so I kinda just left it alone.

i am almost positive it is the oil pump. some mustang guy thought i was running a gear drive hahaha.
i have solid motor mounts and i still have almost no vibration. passengers don't notice it any vibration woooo. my buddys car has been whinning for 6 month now so i'm not worried i was just curious if anyone else noticed the sound.

This may be a side effect on the oil pump from the increased oil pressure from eliminating the B/S.

Oh well....I just live with it.

I also noticed a engine whine after a BSE. Anyone else have an explanation for this?

Im still going to stick with the increased oil pressure theory. By 4000rpm when the car is not fully warmed up the oil pressure shoots up to 100+psi. While driving, if oil pressure reaches maybe 60-75 psi it starts squeeling.

I will be porting the oil filter housing to drop the oil pressure and I ran the oil feed from the head (less oil pressure) so I wouldnt destroy the turbo but still its had its effects on the turbo seals.

I done the bse and I have no whine at all. I would check the timing belt from time to time. The noise could be from the belt rubbing.

Its been like this for years now, Even with new pulleys, timing belt, waterpump and oil pump. I run a forward facing oil filter housing which may have somthing to do with it, being there is no cooler or anything to give up some oil pressure.

Has anyone ever thought of a powersteering pump issure? have it flushed, chances are it needs it anyway. I did the BSE and never had the whine. Maybe bad bearing on the tensioner pulley?

i know this threads old but i did a bse kit on my 7 bolt and i had a bad whine i thought it was the timing belt pulleys so i changed all of them and it still done it so i said f-it i'm driving it, i went to back out and the motor lost power and locked up....... i let it sit for 8 months before tearing the oil pan off to find out that the balance shaft stub had froze up and locked the motor up . a differnt oil pump and a cut off balance shaft and good as new...... no whine !

I know this thread is old but wanted to give my .02. If your running a 6bolt and haven't changed your oil pump gears you are still running straight cut gears and this could account for the whine. Also what stubby shafts were you using that may have created this sound, ones with or without the oil groove?

This can all play a role in noise on that side of the motor along with pulleys/rollers and belt tension.
