I just picked up a manual rack and pinion for my 90 GSX and would like some simple opinions on whether or not the conversion is worht the trouble of removing my power steering equipment.

Thanks

You don't need to go to a manual rack it you don't want power steering pump. It might somewhat easier with a manual rack with the pump but if your complaining about that then you'd better stay with the power steering.

WRONG :tease:

Id suggest a electric powersteering swap from a MR2

Personally, I like the powersteering. I did a full P/S system tuck and added a front mount powersteering cooler to the mix :)

I have a SW20 Toyota MR2 turbo T-top car, yes it has electric power steering. Engine in rear, there is no mechanical P/S pump on the engine exchanging fluid the whole length of the car. It has an electric P/S pump mounted under the front hood. (keep in mind the MR2 has NO engine weight sitting on the front steer tires... Turning is easy no matter what in this car) I've read about people swapping this system over to DSM tho, have never personally seen this swap up close and in person in real life, but from what i have heard is that its "so-so". Id imagine you gain the cleanlyness of no mechanical pump, very SMALL gain from the engine not having to turn another belt. But im willing to bet it dont work as smooth as the stock OEM pump, but im sure its tons better than the ghetto style P/S removal. Maybe the feel lands right in between the stock feel and the ghetto feel?

well "so-so" is much less acclaim than i've read received by the ghetto style. so far as i've gathered, either using a manual rack or using the miata method is better than just looping the lines, which most people seem to be happy with. so unless i can find a manual rack at a decent price, so far no luck, at this point i'm edging towards this miata mod.

has anyone gone as far as welding the pinion shaft? I'm about to break into my rack just to get that seal off, and am wondering is the welding part that much of an improvement. apparently there is some "slop" between the splines of the shaft and that miatabusa site shows a little vid of the slop which looks pretty significant. can anyone add an opinion on this part? thanks

Im stuck at the stop ring in steering rack housing. Its this step here:

flyinmiata.com/tech/depower.php?x=6

Im confused as to how he got that ring out. Am I supposes to somehow compress it in that hole to release this fat spacer/washer thing at the top holding stuff in? I punched it like a monkey with a punch like the page suggested and gave it a nice dent but now have hurt parts. I have a bad habit of injuring parts. Haven't encountered these parts before. Thanks for any help that may come on by.

you have to spiral the stop ring out of the hole. IIRC, i had to start it with a small screwdriver and punch. its under some pressure so be careful taking it out and putting it in. got grease in my eye when i did it, not fun. looks creepy if you dont get it out quick enough, whole eye turns black WTF
