1) i have a very unstable idle
2) mechanic friend sniffed my exhaust said i was blowing a ridiculously high hydrocarbon count ( hoping i didnt destroy my cat already )

injen intake, 2 1/2" downpipe, 3" catback, upper intercooler pipe w/ 1st gen BOV, 550cc injectors, walbro 255, hks 264 cams, aem cam gears, MBC, ngk wires/plugs.

what is the difference between a fpr and a afpr?
i dont know enough about this stuff to justify spending over a 100bucks
your help is much appreciated
thanx

Yes you do!!! You are running WAYYYYY more fuel than your computer can compensate for on its own right now...

Fpr= fuel pressure regulator
Afpr= adjustable fuel pressure regulator....

It is possible to drive your car without one but it is very unsafe for your engine and it will KILL your gas mileage.... think about it this way.... all of that EXCESS fuel spraying into your motor and not being burned can mix with your oil and remove some of its lubricating properties... That can result in your rings scraping up against your cylinder bore and damaging your engine because of the lack of lubrication......

He sniffed the exhaust?
If your idle is unstable, check your plugs and wires first. Then you can hunt down fuel problems if that doesnt work.

wheres the cheapest place to find one?
im working backwards learning off guys like the one that started this post, im doin a afpr first. then pump, then ecm, then injectors.
not meant to highjack, just need related info

Aeromotive is a popular one. You can usually find a kit on ebay for a decent price.

STM is having a sale on their Fuelabs 2g kit at the moment, you can check the vendor announcements forum.

You can check fuel pressure to be sure the Overrun is the problem. You should have a WB if you have bigger injectors and an afc. If the fpr is not being over ran you should be able to tune it out.

You can also Downgrade to a 190lph or Evo fuel pump and be just fine as well. Good option if money is an issue.

Fuelab makes one that is less expensive, I have one and love it.
Stay away from the b&m one.
FTS (full throttle speed) used to make one that bolted right to the rail, that was super easy.

If money is tight you can use an obx or megan one off ebay. I had one on my previous car and it worked ok. But I wasn't boosting really high either.

Whatever you do, stay far away from the $30 ebay afpr. A friend gave me one and i found my fuel pressure changing every 2 seconds. 43psi, drive around the block then idles at 35psi? WTF I wouldn't even give that afpr to an enemy.

On my 97 TSi I ran 650's, AFC and No AFPR and drove, ran fine. Having a 255 does not always mean your FPR is being overrun. I am 1 of 4 that I know that have made over 400awhp with stock FPR and 255.

Yulp,

(But try dialing your trims in with no AFPR it's a pita because I thought I was fine and dandy also with a SAFC but once you start messing with something that really tunes,logs you'll want a AFPR trust me)

I run a 190+rewire stock fpr and 30psi+meth my IDC are 50%ish(880s) bigger fuel pump is not always the answer these days and seeing you have 550s...

ehh..

Get dsmlink or something save your troubles your problem might not even lie in the fpr could be other problems I bet.

Whats controlling these 550s? pure luck? SAFC,DSMlink or did you just drop n go?
