then said mechanic needs to foot 3500$ bill because it wasnt that way when you brought it to him was it? please tell me you did not pay 3500$ for their #### up?

Hell no, I told him to give me my car right away and he'd never see me again... I went to ace, and bought a spark plug "refresher", cleaned up the threads nicely, and no more crossthreads.
5$ fix > 3500$ fix.

LOL Good post!

I am a network engineer by trade. Being in support, the first words out on my mouth when I have customer complaints is "what was the last thing that you did to your network?" and then "was it working before you made that change?"

Same thing applies to cars, plumbing, electrical - anything

So, so true. I'm a Mech E, and this applies to everything ever.

I agree 100%, but don't judge a DSMer by his age. :cough cough: I'm 21 and for some reason I don't think I fall in the "BS" category. :shhh:

Yesserie. Paul V. and Dan K. and Kyle T. would all about fall under that category too (obviously others are also in the mix). :)

i just dont get the mentality that guys that modify cars can no longer take it to a shop, all work must be done yourself, or you're a ####y or somethen. Grow up. I don't have time to do a timing belt, between work and school, and while it may be cheaper to do it myself, i have to take a shot in the nuts and pay more for someone else to do it, because i simply don't have the time. Also, i've never done one before, and as a college student, i can't afford to f*ck up my car.

Thus, this mentality is what guys like the original poster run into- people that think they can do everything themselves, but really can't, but don't want to admit to their buddies. So they bring this mentality into the shop, piss off the mechanic, and end up costing themselves far more money. Real life example- my water pump pulley is sqeaking. I don't have time to do the whole job myself, so my car is going to the mechanic next week. Know what I'm gonna tell him? Hey, i think my water pump pulley is sqeaking. Can you take a look and let me know what needs replaced? thanks.

Amen. Some people definitely go to extremes with the "a real DSMer does ALL his own work", and some, like the "RoadRace did a great job installing my MBC!" Evo guys take it to the opposite extreme.

Personally, I do what I'm comfortable with; turbo swap, suspension, most maintanence, etc. Something like the timing belt, that's for the mechanic.

After all, the last thing you want to do is muck up your daily driver because you went in a little too deep.

^^^ Absolutely. I think the basic "bolt-ons" just about anybody can do. In my opinion, I don't think a timing belt job is a "bolt-on" application, so I would have to agree, that goes to the mechanic.

Well, although the timing isn't bolt-on, it's not really that difficult, and for the price mechanics and dealers ask, it's really ridiculous. I'm 18 years old and i just did my timing for a little over 100$, whereas a local Mitsubishi dealership wanted in the 7 figures range for parts and labor... I think doing your research and taking your time is well worth saving 600$.... don't you think?
O and sometimes, and I mean this in a very few handful of situations, where NOT taking it to a mechanic is the best choice, like in my situation. When I bought the car it had a timing job done, so i figured cool, 60,000 mile mark, needed mandatory change.... almost a year and later I just realize now, that the shop to which the previous owner took the car to.... couldn't have screwed the timing anymore than they did, hydraulic tensioner wasn't changed, intake and exhaust were off by a half a tooth, and to top it all off, the tensioner pulley was installed backwards, so i don't know how they actually tensioned the belt...
I've found it more fun and overall a pretty fun experience doing everything myself to this car..
