I was looking at buying a set of used Eagle rods and ross pistons. The thing is the guy says that 2 rods are discolored and would need to be replaced. What makes the rod become discolored like this and can it be repaired or would I have to buy new one's. Here is a pic of the rods and pistons...

Thanks, Nathan

Lots of heat. The engine those came out of wiped out a couple rod bearings.

The skirts on one piston particularly (not coincedentally, one with a bad rod) doesn't look too hot either.

I'm sure you can put two and two together and figure out what happened there. ;)

I would steer clear.

those rods are rebuildable, the pistons could be polished, What is he asking for them?

He's asking 200 bux. Its Eagle rods and Weisco pistons for a 4g64.

Do you think they could be redone? What would have to be done to them? They are for a friend and it is a budget build.

The pistons are garbage, not fixable at all. The rods aren't worth messing with. Even if they are fixable the cost would probably equal a new set.

The rods would be real cheap to fix. Just some stress releaving, and cut the cap down, and resize it. There is no reason that they can't be fixed. Any good machinist could fix those right up. As for the pistons. They could be fixed too, but i don't think it is worth it. Might be worth buying 2 new ones, it seems that only 2 are damaged and not usable. IF you aren't gonna buy them, send me the link, and i know someone that will.

First of all, if your going to be building a nice motor, why would settle for a set of used rods and pistons that you dont have a clue what they have been through. Save the money and buy a new set because in the long run, you will be better off.

And by the way, those two rods look like hell and so does that piston.

Just my .02

Reconditioning rods is pretty expensive. I used to charge about $100 a rod to do it. And that's with no gaurantee either. Pistons no doubt are junk.

Discoloration, as everyone said, is due to immense heat. Here's what my rods and pistons looked like after I pulled the motor apart. They suffered from lack of oil, and before I could shut it down, the cylinder furthest from the oil pump (#1 or #4) suffered extensive damage from lack of oil, which equals heat...

Um, any machine shop that i have dealt with will charge 15 a rod to rebuild the big end, and shotpeen the rod. That is really about all that is needed, unless the small end is out of spec.

^ Agreed, those are complete junk, all of it. The pistons are seized and they detonated bad. The rods will never be straight again, those overheated big time. May as well throw all of it in the recycling bin.
