Here's the story:
I pulled into my driveway, which had dry pavement at the beginning, and a snow covered hill after the pavement. I usually park in the back so i had to go through the snow to get there. I tried to get momentum by accelerating on the dry pavement and not slip on the snow. Couldnt get up, my car just kept slipping and sliding back down. So i put it into reverse and went all the way back to the dry pavement and tried again. But this time I put it into 1st and the car would not move. The wheels were not spinning and the axles were not rotating. I put the car in the air right where it was and diagnosed a huge piece of ice jammed above the wheel. I took that out and the wheels started spinning, in each gear. WOOO! nope. put the car back down on the ground and put it into first...same thing. All the gears are working, but when i tried to put it INTO gear while on the ground (under a load) it made mildly loud grinding noise. Is the differential done for? Possibly a broeken axle? The speedomenter is moving while i give it gas, so the Diff. is getting power. Viscious Coupler? Clutch?
