What is the difference between composite and ceramic brake pads?

The difference is the coefficient of friction, which is a number based on the material, that measures the materials resistance to movement, when in contact with another surface. The higher the coefficient of friction, the more energy required to move the object, or in the case of brakes, the better the stopping potential.

There are about three maybe four? different types of brake material. Organic, Composite (which would be a semi metallic pad, or even a metallic pad). There is also ceramic, as you mentioned. Somewhere with in those, is carbon fiber, but not sure which category, or if the carbon fiber is referred to as the ceramic??

Anyway basically the ability of the pad to withstand heat, increase stopping power increases according to the order listed above, with ceramic being one of the premium pads. Also the pads ability to be quiet, less dust, etc, also improves along the same order. The pads ability to reduce wear on the rotor, also increases with the order listed.

For my 1g, and most other DSM’s, OEM material is a semi metallic. Hope that helps. Somewhere there was a good article referenced on brakes.

Brakes don’t stop your car, your tires do!! :thumb: :laser:
