Hey,

I noticed that Dejon is no longer marketing their cold air box. I was wondering if anyone else sells these or if I could borrow one from a local to make a template. (Matt I'm looking your way on this one)

wrets write ups are awsome for this... both the box, and the plumbing where the stock SMIC used to be. its all good tho. ive seen some made of beer boxes, tape and foam LOL.
aluminum looks so much cleaner.

i dont think routing a duct to the box could blow it off, less of a chance if its alum'.

Ya, currently I made a template with some old cardboard boxes. At first I just made the hole like a church door, so the piece just slides over the air filter neck and sits there. After seeing a lot of pictures where the bottom is sealed too I gotta redo it.

I should practice on cardboard anyway, I like the strength of aluminum over cardboard but aluminum sheets are about 10 bucks so I don't wanna mess up.

As far as the "blowing the box open" concern, I'll do my best to recall some physics.

When air moving at some speed suddenly is forced to stop, the pressure goes up. Same goes for air at rest and something running into it (making that air all the sudden go as fast as what hit it) - it's all relative. It's easy to calculate what the pressure increase is (called stagnation pressure). I did this for calculating the effect of a ram air system on a little race car we built in college.

If V=velocity (speed) of the car and RHO=density of air, and P=pressure increase, the following formula will do the trick:

P=(RHO*V^2)/2

But you have to be careful about what units you use. If you have RHO in g/cc and V in cm/s, then you get pressure in g/(cm-s^2). Then you have to convert that into something convenient like psi. I'll let someone figure out the ram air pressure for, say, 75mph at sea level ;). Google will convert units for you.

I think that many of these dams are actually pinched between the frame and hood, and are bolted between the filter and MAS, so they're fairly secure.

The geek in me can't help but point out that the above equation was discovered by a man named Bernoulli. It's why airplanes fly and why turbochargers work.

let me guess, you work at the labs up there LOL?
