A/R stands for the area ratio when talking about the exhaust turbine housing. If you want the complicated definition, it is the area ratio of the turbine housing inlet divided by the radius of the center of the turbine wheel to the center of the turbine housing inlet. In simplified terms, the larger the A/R, the better the flow and top end power. With a larger A/R you are sacrificing spool up time for more flow and top end power. With a lower A/R, there is more backpressure, but spool up time is decreased compared to a larger A/R. A lower A/R will flow less, but spool up faster, while a larger A/R will spool up slower, but deliver more power.
