i spun a rod bearing and it appears that the pistons touched the head. you can just barely tell that it touched because the carbon was removed from the area around valves on the cylinder that spun.
do i need to get the head decked no matter what? also can you put a head back on a block without getting any machine work done to it, or will it need work no matter what.

let me know if you are missing some info that you need to know.

I doubt it but I would check two things first.
1. remove the valve and with a dial indicator check to see if the face of the valve is true to the stem. also make sure there is no binding between the valve stem and the valve guide.
2. With a straight edge check the deck of the head for flatness within spec.

If the valves touched they are most likely bent. If the head is still on the car do a compression test.

Decking the head is optional but better safe than sorry IMO.

Get it surfaced no matter what..
while it's at the machine shop, have them leaktest the ports on the cylinder that you messed up.

you can check to see if any valves are bent yourself by spraying some brake clean in the ports and watch to see if it leaks threw around the valve seat. If it comes out as fast as it goes in, its definitely bent. but if your gonna resurface it anyways you can just have a shop check it our for you.
