deciding on a turbo kit

ok so im going turbo this summer and ive been trying to decide on what turbo kit i want. Right now i have three different possibilities one being the treadstone kit

or what i originaly planned to do was build my own kit, all of them cost around the same amount im leaning more to just building my own because ill pic and choose what i want turbo size, fuel mods, bov type things like that i dunno anybody feel like helping me decide
 
I think that this is really just a decision that you should make. Although, IMO I would build my own especially if you're gonna wait until summer and it might end up costing less. Gathering the parts should take until then depending on the funds and I take it that you've done some serious research, so I vote for piecing together your own kit.

P.S. That Treadstone kit is really nice for that price though and I really like the fact that it comes with the downpipe/dumptube.
 
I do not know much about the conversion. however, unless you can not have 2 cars it would seem that after $2000.00 for the kit, the install time/tuning time and other misc. all added together it would seem that a 1G AWD turbo could be had. Again I am not 100% on this, maybe someone who has done the conversion could reply.

The treadstone kit is pretty nice, but at the same time you can get all of the parts you want exactly by building your own. As far as Hahn, for the price you can build a really sick kit with quality parts you're not going to replace ie. walbro instead of the inline, sfmu or better instead of the cartech, etc. Piecing it together is nice because you don't have to drop all the $$ at once so it doesn't hit your wallet as hard
 
p.s.,

dont listen to people with factory turbo eclipses...it seems they have a fetish for talking the N/Ts out of turboing their cars. Correct me if im wrong, but a turbo 420A is alot lighter than a 46G3, so if you plan it right...your 420 can blow away the AWD competition.

i went with the treadstone kit myself and i am very pleased, all you need is a fcd, walbro 255 and a fmu and i would also recommend buying high quality oil lines and fittings

In any case, we have specific rules against suggesting a user sell his N/T in favor of a 4G63.
 
Ivan300, how difficult was it to install the Treadstone? thats what im leaning towards buying. also, did the downpipe fit right on, or did you have to weld anything?

ill have the funds this summer and i think itll cost less because my piece it together kit is everything i need. as for the research yea ive been researching for awhile and continue to research. right now im still leaning more towards piecing it together...

yea i have that piece actually saved on my favorites list haha. my problem is that i will only be able to work on it on the weekends and plus i cant do half the stuff gsgoinfast can do. i used his write up as an outline and added in some of my own ideas and some from sbr, basicly took stuff from each kit to make the one i want.

Well I have never installed or have seen a turbo in my life before my install haha. I just did a bunch of research to the point where I knew what every part was blindfolded.

The kit comes with no fuel system. All the parts are high quality except for the oil lines/fittings, mine came with -3an fittings while the ss line was -4an. The oil drain fitting is made to be tapped into the oil pan. I would recommend getting a bung welded so there are no worries about leaking. Also the oil drain line is too short, about 2 inches bigger would be great.

The kit did not come with enough silicone couplers or a flange for the waste gate. The intercooler fit very well and looks great.

Looks like treadstone just updated their website and it looks like they include a premade downpipe now. However it still needs to be slightly modified to bolt on to the stock exhaust. Before all the included was 2 steel pipes.

The kit is great the main issues I had with treadstone is their service. It took them over a month to ship my kit. Every week there would be a new setback. Overall I am happy with it. It was a very stressful and fun install.

For the first time me ever turbo'ing my car, it took me roughly 2 days on and off working on it. I would do some easy stuff before you actually throw on the turbo though so it takes less time when you have time to install it all. Things like FCD's, FMU's, Fuel pumps, etc. can be done before actually mounting the turbo on and they can be great little projects even weeks before you car sees boost. Stuff that took the longest for me and Josh to do was mounting the manifold, making the downpipe, oil lines, and cutting/fabbing the intercooler pipes. Other than that, most everything is a piece of cake to do, but just a little time-consuming.

Also, I would say if you want to create your own kit, set aside $2000 to put towards all your parts minimum. I tried to do my first kit for about $1500-1600 and I had oil leaks, fitment issues, etc. and was kind of a pain to just keep running reliable. I upgraded to better oil lines, new manifold, wastegate, etc and it was a lot easier and trouble-free afterwards.
 
treadstone has a premade downpipe now?? damn if i had only waited a little while longer. But im installing it now. all you need as well as the kit is a fuel pump/FMU and gauges. I am very pleased with my treadstone kit.

yea i was gonna do the fuel stuff and tap the oil pan things like that first before the mounting the turbo things like that i also have a daily driver so i can take as much time as i need to make it right, its gonna cost bout 2 grand for everything i need then im putting about 500 bucks aside for everything extra that i might need.

Im thinking treadstone for the manifold, ic piping, and intercooler. i gotta get someone to weld up the oil pan and fab up a down pipe besides that im thinking it shouldnt be to bad of a job.

If you want to go with that style manifold, I (along with a few other members on here) have gone with the "Autosquare Manifold". It's basically the same thing, but I got it for $185 shipped. I also went with a FMIC+ piping (couplers and clamps included) from them for around $210 shipped and it held up very nicely (until I nailed a deer haha). Just trying to help a fellow member save some money haha :thumb:

Yeah Knight, ive got the same problem as you...ive never welded before...nor do i have a welded to try...so thats my main issue
 
by the way knight, Treadstone deffinitely includes a pre-welded downpipe now in their kit, so that will save a little time and money if you go with that kit.

yea it comes with the dump tube for the wastegate too, im just gonna get a shop in town to do it, they also have a dyno may get em to tune it too;)
