After continually paying over $120 a week in gas to get to work i decided to get back into another eclipse the first having been a 420A the 4g63 is a bit more complex i get a 96 spyder three days ago after work and driving 2 hours to trailer it home charge the battery and it starts right up but sounds horrible. shut it off sounds like a knock so i decide to check for exhaust leaks found that the exhaust manifold was missing 4 nuts on the head side, the back right that holds bolts the turbo, and it has a full megen exhaust 3" and where the exhaust and the pipe that comes down to it is missing one of the two bolts there. then to top it off the oil return line has both bolts on it (turbo side) but the line is just pushed in there (hanging) and the entire underside of the car is covered in oil. the motor did have oil in it when i picked it up but im thinking that maybe the knock is valves from the exhaust not really being connected? whats the possible damage from the return line not being fully connected or the exhaust leaking everywhere.. i pulled each plug wire one by one while runnning and it didnt make a difference on the sound..

The damage from the oil return line would be leaking out enough oil to create engine damage by running low on oil. The exhaust leaks will cause improper air fuel ratios and on hard abuse can certainly create engine damage. From what you described the car sounds like a basket case and I would certainly be going over everything and try and find the source of the knock. Good luck with the car hopefully not a blown engine.
