cylinder head removal

i am new to dsm and i need to remove the head to change the head gasket. i took off all the bolts that i could see and the head still wont come off does anybod kno if there is a bolt holding the head on from the back under neath the intake mani ?

all tips would be greatly appreciated

there is a rod or what ever you wanna call it that connects to intake mani to the block looks like a support of some type. take those three bolts off (12mm) then after im assuming you took all surrounding things off use some good old fashion prying to get the head up

no if you look behind the intake mani. or better yet use your hand you will feel the bracket connected to it. take you hood off if you havent already makes things alot better

+1 to 1990gsx1781. Its the intake manifold stay. Under the intake manifold its bolted to the block and the manifold. If I remember correctly you should be able to follow the vacuum lines you took off the throttle body down to it.

Yup like the other guys said,the bracket on the intake manifold will pose a problem. the other bracket on the head could pose a problem but I dont remember exactly what that is like, my car is a 2gen...

Also, the thermostat housing is connected to the coolant pipe on the water pump and if you dont take the thermostat housing off you will have problems also.

If those three things are off and you still can get the head off, make sure the head isnt hanging up on the dowl pin aligners that are pressed into the block to keep the head centered. you may have to use a pry bar to loosen the head but BE CAREFUL and take your time.

the bracket holding the intake manifold to the side of the block uses a 14mm bolt. you can simply remove the lone bolt to the block (bottom of bracket) and then list the head up with the intake. its a lot easier to remove the head without the intake though. but some of the bolts under the intake to the head are hard to get to if you have large hand and arms.
