Hi all..

I am doing some looking around, etc... for finding ways to build my own turbo system for my car...
I have spent a lot of money on other things for my car, and am curious if I can build a turbo system on my own..
Parts:
16g turbo
turbo manifold
intercooler
lines
piping?
Seems like it wouldnt be too hard to acquire the parts? perhaps i would save 30 percent?
I know of a company that makes exhaust manifolds for our gs 420a's for about 300 bux.
16g turbos are a dime a dozen... piping... the same.
Am i missing the big picture here? or whats the prob? why doesnt anyone do this, like i want to?
I just cannot justify paying 3200 bux for parts that are being packaged in a kit???
Hahn even sells a NICE FMIC for 399! whats up?

I personally went with the Hahn kit. Its true you could save some money on your own but its not really the money its the time. Remember you gotta upgrade your fuel system as well. So new lines for all, FPR, and the math involved. I bought the kit simply because someone had figured all this out for me. But if you can get the manifold then that is one of biggies. I say go for it. I may have tried it if I had the knowledge I do now of putting my kit on but not without seeing the big picture. It isnt too complicated if you take your time on it. So I say go for it!

Outside of a wastegate, BOV, and an assortment of lines. I dont see why you couldnt build your own, as long as you have the knowledge to work your way through a problem if it arrises, such as a part you over look in your planning or having to improvise on a part that may not install without modification. A kit a remedy's all this worry, but it can be less expensive if you do it yourself IF know what your doing and need. When it comes to turbo systems what your mainly paying for is the NEW Super 16G (from hahn I believe) or a NEW T3/T4 hybrid snail from the STAR kit, FMIC and pipping. But if were going to go through the headache of haggling for cheaper prices to build my own kit, I'd go with a better turbo than a normal or possibly used 16G. Maybe a 16G from a Evo. But I'd look at the T3/ T4. It may not spool up as fast as the Mitsu 16G but it has greater HP potencial. Hell if your engine is pushing enough power, why go into the T4 family (though, I'm not sure our 420A's could push one correctly, without heavy modification  ) Good luck, anyone add to this? :thumb: :dsm: :talon: :laser:

It definately has been done before. A couple people on 2gnt.com have done custom turbo setups and there are a couple guys who make exhaust manifolds to your turbo's specifications.
