I'm in the process of changing the timing belt on my 2G and have the balance shaft belt re-installed and almsot had the main timing belt installed, but ran into a problem. Once the main timing belt was attached and I rotated the crank 1/4 turn and back, I couldn't move it back all the way. It turns out the crankshaft sensor blade was hitting the balance shaft tensioner/idler pulley.

I have tried reversing both the balance shaft pulley and the blade, but it always hits the pulley no matter what I do. Has anyone ever had this problem or can figure out if I'm missing something? I have attached a photo if it helps. I have searched the forums and can't find a single thing on this issue. I have triple- and quadruple-checked to make sure I have the blade and pulley on correctly and even tried to put so much tension on the balance shaft so the pulley would be that much further away from the crank, but it has not helped. I really need to get my car running by Monday and appreciate any help you may offer!

Try rotating the balance shaft tensior pulley clockwise so that it pushes away from the crankshaft pulley and tensions the balance shaft belt by pushing up instead of to the right.

The hole on the pulley is offset to that rotating it should free up some space there. It looks like the pulley is almost rubbing your front casing too.

[edit] I found a picture to help you understand. See where the bolt is in relation to the tensioner pulley in my picture, vs the location in your picture.

Ah yes, thanks for the help. I don't know what I was thinking...AND the manual says push UP on the pulley to tighten. I never thought to change direction. Thank you soooo much!

Ahwell, we all have our blonde moments. Just curious how come you aren't just going to eliminate the balance shafts.?
