Quick question guys. Just did a timing belt and putting it back together and noticed on the outer crank pulley(1g 4g63) it has a hole for a dowel pin but there is no dowel pin in the crank sprocket. I see a hole where one might... have been but am unsure. I used whiteout to mark the dimple marks on the pulley to help me later when timing. So my question is where should the dimples on the pulley line up in relation to the crankshaft key? I hope somebody knows.

Is this the pin that your reffering too? If so, I'd just pick up a small roll pin from home depot, lowes, etc, and put it in there. That alignment pin is just so you can correctly adjust ignition timing via a timing light and the CAS. W/out it in there, you may not bolt on the crank pulley correctly and it will be nearly impossible to correctly time the engine.

Yes but the timing marks on the lower timing cover are for setting ignition timing via a timing light and the CAS. And w/out the timing mark on the crank pulley (not crank sprocket), or if its in the wrong place, like it would be if the crank pulley wern't lined up, then you couldn't properly ingnition time the engine.

sorry guys dumb question LOL, I had a brain fart and was quick to post this last night. I went out and thought duh if I just turn the sprocket to tdc and line the dimples up with the tdc mark on the cover thats where it should be. Sorry! Thanks though!

Project Tsi- I understand that the tab is not to be used for setting basic timing, good tip though :thumb: I was just trying to refence the dimples like Dantheman1983 had asked, and you had allready covered the pin part of the deal. Setting the pistons at top dead center and placing the cover on and holding the pulley up would be an easy reference, I thought.

Dantheman1983- I would install that roll pin like Project Tsi recommended for future reference. If you got in a hurry in the future and forgot about the marks and installed the pulley incorrectly and could not time the car it would be a slight pita to remove and re-install correctly. Saves headaches.
