Ok, I tried a search but could not find what I was looking for. What is the typical shop estimate for replacing a crank pulley and the belt? Mine went a couple days ago, and I am away at college with the car. It was stuck in a parking garage and I have no place to work on it here, so I was forced to have it towed to a local shop. Now I have never done it but I figured it would be a fairly routine repair. The shop called and said it would be $600 for the pulley, 2 belts, and labor, and that they would need to take out the motor mounts and left the motor. Does this sound right? I am new to the area and have already had a bad experience with another shop, so I just want to make sure everything is kosher before I give the ok to do the work

Mechanics will do that to you.

A by the book repair, would include replacing the alternator, air conditioner, and power steering belt. To access the air conditioner belt, the driver's side mount would have to be removed. Lifting the engine would not be necessary.

Crank pulley, ~$100, belts, ~$60, labor, $65/hr @ 4 hours (they won't exactly be a rally car crew at a service area) ~$260, final total comes to around $420. Personally, I think that is too much, and even a $600 bill to replace a crank pulley is too much (and it can be done in less than 4 hours).

Chance are that if you take your car to another shop, they'll probably quote you around the same price. If you could, I would say do it yourself, but I don't know if you'll have any space to do it (plus it's pretty damn cold to be doing anything on the car), so it looks like you may have to bite the big one and shell out. It sucks.

I would highly recommend doing it yourself. You just need to take the alt. and A/C belts loose, then take the 4 12mm bolts off of the pulley and put the new one on and reverse the procedure. Shouldn't take more than an hour tops for a shop to do. You don't HAVE to remove the side motor mount but it makes it a little easier.

I strongly agree with 95BlackGSTurbo.

The job is fairly easy for even rookie mechanics. Pick up a new pulley from Mitsu for ~100, new belts from autozone or the like for ~15, and save yourself tons of money. I've done the job for people more times than I can count and would hate to think of them going somewhere that would charge them that amount for a piddly amount of work.

If you know anyone who is even slightly mechanically inclined to help, that might be a great aid to you. Otherwise, post up any problems you run into and we'll walk you through it.

I may see if I can borrow a driveway or something, I certainly don't mind the cold if it will save me $300+. I wouldn't mind paying for it to be done in my circumstances, but as you have confirmed I felt like they were trying to screw me. College town though, so I guess they get alot of live ones.

Sweet bleeding rectal tissue. Full-nick for the pulley is on the order of $185, and getting it for half (sometimes a third) that is a matter of calling any of our site sponsors. DSM was kind enough to leave access room for the pulley -juuuust barely- to be removed and installed without dicking with the motor mounts. The job might be "worth" $400, all-up.
Ask around, find who on campus does car work. Any good weekender can do this job, and it's not much more than inconvenient if they manage to make some mistake (like not getting a belt tensioned right afterward).

I have a garage/tools about an hour from you up near Carlisle if you would like to
tow it here. It's a little chilly outside, but I have a kerosene heater out there.

Send me a message if interested.

haha Thats what I was gonna say, but im a bit farther than an hour. If I decide to drive to hearshey to watch my old HS in the state championship game maybe ill swing by and throw it in for you  Just kidding, but listen you can do this your self its not too hard. I did mine in an hour and half with having never done it before. ....laying in snow. :sneaky:

I just did it myself in the middle of the street on morning in 10 degree weather.
This is my first dsm, had no clue what to expect but it was easy as anything.
These are the step's I took and got it done in about ~1 hour. (mind the freezing weather too)

1. Jack up the front driver side.
2. Remove front driver side wheel.
3. Remove bottom left area splash guard when looking in at the wheel well. (Held in by weird plastic popping screw things)
4. Now you total access too the pulley and can see everything, my belts fell off when it broke, if yours are still on, it’s a good time to remove them, or buy new ones if they broke.
5. Remove the 4 bolts holding pulley on to crank, not big on in the middle.
6. Can take a little bit but smack or pull pulley off.
7. Replace with new pulley and tighten up tight.
8. Put belts back on, not making the alternator belt too tight as that destroyed my pulley.
9. Put the splash guard and tire back on, start car, make sure everything is together and have fun saving a ton of money.

Hope you do it yourself, and good luck!

Find away to do it youself. You'll save four to five hundred dollars depending if you get a new or used pulley.IT should only take you about an hour to an hour and a half if you take your time.

Make sure to get a crank pulley WITH a harmonic balancer (layer of rubber between the two metal rings. Those "all aluminum racing OMGpwnz0r" pulleys have a tendency to break engines.

i know what its like to just not have the means, but it you can get help from these fellows, i would JUMP on it.
