So I have a 96 Gst.......

would an E-prom ECU from 95 and earlier models allow me to read knock on my S-afc II and my pocketlogger ?

And does my factory 2g wiring plug right into the E-prom ECU as it is with my existing S-afc II wiring ?

EDIT* I see that it is the ECU that doesn't allow me to read knock.
Search is my friend now :thumb:

Thanks very much for the info :thumb:

Actually, the 2g EPROM ECU with a Keydiver Stage III will show you up to 15 counts of knock on the stock boost gauge. It's one of the features Jeff programs into his chips. As you mentioned, you can't do this on a non-EPROM ECU OBD II car since these will not show knock on the logger. But you can see where timing dips and this will usually indicate that it's being pulled due to knock. I like the EPROM ECU route since I like to know how much knock I'm getting and not just that I'm getting some. Also, the EPROM ECU is a direct plug in and there are no harness changes.

Make sense?

On the same topic of confusion about knock, I too have a question. My logger is reading a max of 43 knock counts at WOT around 3.5k till 6k, is it possible to actually get 43 counts of knock or is this an indication of a bad knock sensor that needs to be replaced?

Also, where is the knock sensor located, and how do I check if it is bad or not?

At 43 counts of real knock, you'd feel so much timing pulled that the motor would feel like it had an anchor attached to it. I would think that after nearly 15 years of operation either your knock sensor needs to be replaced, or your lifters are very noisy. Either way it sounds much more like phantom knock than real knock. I'd replace the sensor and see if that helps.

As far as location, these are midway down the back of the block under the intake manifold and quite a pain to get to. Be very careful when installing the new one since over tightening will cause the same issues you're experiencing now. Attached is a shot that Defiant posted on a similar thread. This is for a 2G, but it should get you in the ballpark.

Hope that helps!

thanks! oh yea, and when knock is starting to be read it pulls my timing from ~25 deg to ~1 deg

Yup, I'd say the knock sensor's toast. Change it out and let us know if that fixes it.
