Confused about intake options

My daughter bought a 2g eclipse spyder convertible. We are not looking to mod it for more power. She's driving it to college and it'll mostly sit there.

I've included pictures because I'm confused as to what options are needed to make it road trustworthy. Right now it will sometimes (often) stall out while at idle. This is because it has no airbox. (See pics.)

according to the VIN via carfax it has the 2.4L non-turbo engine.

I just need to get the simplest/cheapest way to put this vehicle reliably on the road. I started out looking at intake systems, but the pipes are varied in lengths... how to know?

Next I looked at getting a MAF adapter and a filter. This seemed simple enough, but then what about the sensor nodules? Don't they need to connected up somewhere?

So what info can I provide to get a good answer as to what to buy for this vehicle? I don't care about 'power' or 'tail pipe noise.' It's for my little girl. :D

Here are some pics. Hope they help.

LOL So, you have been running with no Filter!

From what I can see the filter box is gone. Just go to a junkyard and find the parts and bolt it on. Probaly take 5 mins. But, I wouldn't even trust that engine since it's been driven with no filter.

4g64 Is a very common engine, you will find parts probaly in any yard.

The other cheap way is go autozone or peb boys and get a specter filter adapter and a small cone filter, I think I spent about 30 for both. When I get home ill take a pic a post it. You might have to do a lil dremel work to make it fit flush tho.

I would also just do this since it would probably be faster and less of a hassle. Its not that big of a deal what kind you get since you are not worried about gaining power.

2 options here:
MAF adapter and cone filter or just replace the stock box.

The adapter and filter would be be less expensive but the area i live in is VERY particular about driving a stock car LOL I dont know about your area.

Ok so here it is, the first is what the setup looks like. i have a gsx but the adapter works the same for both. The adapter is 15 and the filter I got is 17 from pep boys.
I had to do a small amount of dremel work on the plastic adapter to go around 2 of the screws but that was it.

Actually, with a closer look, it doesnt look like you have to do any dremel work at all.
