cometic headgasket, HP vs regular

I just asked not to long ago a thread like this, cometic will hold high boost and give you alittle more of a safer feeling while the stock one is good till 25ish PSi...

All the shops will tell you something else. Buschur tells people to stick with OEM, Magnus swears by the cometic, and AMS has stuck with the MLS.

Personally, after reading all of the tech archives on NABR, I went witht the MLS gasket. Copper spray with the MLS and ARP's will hold pretty much 30pounds plus.

the HP version has fire rings around each cylinder that is suppose to help sealing..kinda like having o-rings...but ive heard alot of people having problems getting them to seal good.

theres a long thread in the extreme tech about HG's...ide reccomend reading it before you decide on anything.

Cometic HP vs Cometic regular,(NOT oem). Ive heard of a few people having problems with the hp and I wanted some more details.

I use the hks I have had a cometic before over priced in my opinion.
To be honest the true mitsu metal gasket is pretty tough

I have the cometic "HP" version and I didnt have a problem getting it to seal at all, I didnt use copper spray either. Cometic headgasket, ARP's, gasket remover, and a straight edge razor. Although I am still on the 14b I havent had any problems. The headgasket looks really heavy duty, pretty much from what I read and experienced myself its a badass headgasket.

The only real reason to get a Cometic HP , or cometic for that reason, would be if you got a 2.4L because you don't have much of a choice. If it's still a 2.0, stick with a basic composite or MLS and it'll be good enough unless either your block or head are warped.

I do have a 2.4l, and Im deciding between the HP or the normal cometic. So far I think im going to go with the normal cometic.

I've also heard they have different thickness. The regular Cometic is 0.054" while the HP is 0.057" It's not a big difference, but it helps maintain proper piston to head clearance when using more torque on the ARP headstuds.

I have one on order from a certain popular vendor, I'll let you know more IF IT EVER GETS HERE!

No question about it then. Get the HP if you want to run real boost levels.

Actually the Cometic gasket can be ordered, besides having the desired bore size, with the desired thickness too. Taking into consideration the amount of the material that has been removed at resurfacing and the desired compression ratio you can compensate with having the correct thickness of the gasket and you can do that down to Thousands of an inch.
Just make sure you get the HP one which should be $96.
You don't need to "coat" it(it has a Viton coating applied) and it does not need to be re-torqued.
Mitch.

does anyone know the stock gasket thickness also? I know the cometic can be ordered in a lot of thicknesses and bores. I have had my head and blocked decked, so I want to use a thicker headgasket than stock.

The HP comes in .030, .036, .043, .057.

How tightly the head is torqued down does not affect piston to head clearance, so long as the head isn't so loose it's flopping around on the block.

cometics are on sale for $ 65 at importperformancewarehouse or that is what I heard.

maybe, maybe not; never looked

I don't know which one I got but it's holding 26-27psi on stock bore block
