what is the basic difference between a coilover and a lowering spring?
i like to a 1.5 inch drop for my gst, what should i get?

Coilovers have a normal adjustment from 0-4 inch drop. Aftermarket springs are at a set height.
They both give a stronger spring rate which doesnt allow the vehicle to roll as much on turns by lowering the center of gravity. They also give a stiffer ride for the street.

Eibachs will give you about that drop. Id go with springs since you wont want to be adjusting the height anyways. (will affect your camber and wear tires)

Pick a shock and go...... Dont forget a camber adjustment....

If you have bad winters where you live I would go with coilovers, because they are adjustable. I have kyb agxs with Intrax springs and my car is like a snowplow. ;)

Are you lowering the car for performance or looks?

If just for looks, go with springs. If you're going for performance, coil-overs. (I know, very generalized.) The difference is that with coilovers you can adjust them for greater performance, but at the sacrifice of comfort. The nice part about the adjustable coilover, though, is that you can "customize" based on what you want to do.
