Clunking noise in rear after launch??

I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem....when I'm at a dead stop and rev the engine to maybe 4500 or so, then dump the clutch, there's some type of clunking noise coming from the rear end....it starts off kind of slow then speeds up. When I shift, pop the clutch, it does the same thing. But it doesn't happen if I don't dump the clutch. The best way I can describe it is it feels kind of like wheel hop in the rear, but it's not wheel hop at all and it sounds kind of like a rubbing/popping/banging noise. Not sure what it is??

This is on a 91 TSi AWD

! It's fine. That's just your driveshaft smacking around. Ask anyone with an AWD. No need to panic...just one of the many joys of owning an AWD DSM...popped the windshield wipers on yet?

could also be the limitedslip rear diff mine did that but i broke my front diff so i was rwd it was a drift car at any speed

if you have a 3 bolt i wouldnt rev it up to 4500 and dump the cluch

This is most likely your problem. It could also be your exhaust hitting, it would normally only do this for first gear though.

Thump Fix Carrier Bearing

Get under the car and see if you can push up in he spots where those carrier bearings are. If you can with no pressure against you besides the weight, they are bad.

It seems like it's pulling me back a bit when it does it though. Like it's trying to rip ass down the road but something is holding it back....maybe all the movement. And yes, the windshield wipers have come on at the highest speed a few times. Crazy

I think she meant have the wipers came on when you launched or shifted hard.

I knew what she meant. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my post....what I was trying to convey was, yes I have launched so hard that the windshield wipers came on at the highest setting.
