Similar problem with my brother in laws integra. What we found out was that even though the boot was still intact. Use a pry bar and try to pry the axle out by the tranny when it's still connected. If it moves or makes a clicking noise, the balls inside may be bad.
Im guessing every bump you hit it also makes a clank.
 
I would bet on the CV joint. But before you swap it check for play maybe n all the suspension joints in that side, just to be sure.
