cheaper short shifter

ok so i seen it here and there but how many people have actually just had a shop cut and weld their shifter. i mostly just need it about 2-3 inches shorter. tired of punching my stereo when shifting . but thats really it right. just have shop cut and reweld. how does this trully effect the throw of it. read around but they all are confusing me. so yeah. thanks

I say go for it. I did this mod myself on my old mustang and little geo.

What you have to understand is that a good short shifter also changes the pivot point if the shifter. But cutting and re-welding will work too

cutting it in half only drops the height of the shifter. youll still have the same throw as before. if your looking for a shorter throw your gonna have to get the actual short throw shifter. if not, then cut that SOB!

i cut about an inch off mine. I find it just perfect. I hate real short shifters.

Just pull your shifter out, cut out how much you want to lose from it, and just take the threaded portion and the lower portion to a shop and they should be willing to weld it together for a couple bucks.

And yeah, cutting it down will not affect the throw, you are just making it shorter.

Just go grab a 2g shifter knob if you don't want to punch you deck. That's what I did and it made a huge difference.

The further from the pivot point, the more your hand moves.

So a shorter "throw" but you still are still actuating things the same.

+1 on there being no real advantage to this. Just wait til you can afford a B&M. They come up used for like $60 a lot and you'll know it's done right and not just cosmetic.

Edit: I must admit I sawzalled my old MX-3's and used an autozone knob when I was younger.

i was actually thinking of doing the same thing. i hate hitting my radio everytime i shift up to 3rd or 5th and sometimes going back into 1st. let me know how it comes out...

I did this on my old car. It worked pretty well. I actually didn't weld it. I did it the ghetto way and just cut it and used the set screws on an aftermarket shifter to hold it on. It acutally held well too.

well the shifter i have now does not have thread anymore on it. but i found a shift knob off a 90 integra that fit right on nicely. so i will do it write atleast and weld it

nope it is the OEM off of a 90 integra. so it is not metal. had one of those and lived in phx and was HORRIBLE IDEA. took out after 2 days of install
