Cheap Powdercoating

Heres a few shots of the last valve cover I did.
Its a shame what converting them from 1600x1200 TIFF to 640x480 jpeg does to the quality of the image.

This valve cover I got from an old galant GSX in a wrecking yard. I chemical dipped the cover then stripped it of its old coating, bead blasted it to smooth everything out nice (remove any casting imperfections) and then retanked it to remove any old oil in the gallies etc.

The color is charcoal metallic, it highly resembles the magenta grey pearl of my gsx. Gonna do my wheels and intercooler piping like this also. Motor mounts too.
You name it I'm powdercoating it in my eclipse, time to get rid of that arkansas corrosion.
So far this color, chrome, and mirror black are my favorites. The picture simple dont do them any justice. :D

Ahh, cool. My "charcoal metallic" looks a bit different....it's a little darker and has more of a metallic flake in it. Yours looks more like the anthracite/gunmetal you see on rims.

They Look AWESOME!

are those clear coated as well?

what bake pattern did you use?

thanks in advance

I havent done any experimenting with clearcoat yet.

That valve cover was baked at 400F for 15minutes then cured at 350F for 20minutes.
It really helps to get the metal as clean and smooth as possible, I did a stocker 2g valve cover with the same color I just left it with the factory finish and it turned out all orange peely and rough.

The super fine glass bead (white in color) works extremely well. It gives the metal a shiny look.

Yea powdercoating is sweet. I actually work at a place that distibutes powdercoating products all over North America. Check out the site just to see the amazing paint systems that are available. We sell mostly to big manufacturers, as the booths are very expensive. I can get anything I want powdercoated for the price of the powder I just havent taken the time. Check it out: ITW Gema Check out the infocenter link, it has a lot of good information about powdercoating.

you can buy some high temp powder through pendry i believe. Its a flat black looking color. it says it can withstand 400 degrees +. So its worth a shot i guess.

400 degrees is no where near 1600 degrees..

don't powerder coat you exhaust manifold, just polish it up.

agreed. sand blast, bead blast, then polish it up and your set

I would like to see somebody powdercoat body panels. I know on our cars it wouldn't work because the bumpers are not metal, but I'd like to see the exterior of a car powdercoated and see how it holds up.
