i got my wheels powdercoated black and left the lip a high polish color. I know its black wheels on black and many may think its wierd, but if interested, come check out my pics and tell me what you guys think. thanks

I like the black on black. my friend has a black 1G with black rims/polished lip. i really like the way that looks. also, those rims look nice on his red 1G as well.

props to the car overall as well!

Looks like I'm about to check out harbor freights site right now :D

sorry to bring this post back from the dead. But i was searching around about powdercoating and i noticed that the Harbor Frieght website has that gun for sale for 50 bux now! Looks like im gonna have to pick one of these up and find myself an oven.

i got my oven for FREE at the local Furniture & Appliance mart, in their "garbage bin". the wharehouse guy said i could take any of them from out there too try out. since i don't have gas in my garage though, i needed 220v, and one that worked! luckily i found one, digtal too!

How much is it costing you guys out of your pockets to purchase everything .. and do each of these parts?

when you figure in cost of electricity, the compressor, the powder, and gun.. it's still fairly cheap overall if done properly. the best thing to do though, is do as much as possible at the same time. if you have to fire up the oven and compressor multiple times, it will cost you much much more. it stays fairly reasonable if you do a lot at the same time. take an entire day, or afternoon at least... and do all the same colored stuff for you & your friends at one time. you'll be OK then.

honestly, i think the electricity to run the oven & compressor is just as expensive as the powders for each run. you can go a long way w/ 1lb of powder though too. so have multiple oven racks, and just keep spraying pieces while others bake. then you can just swap out the racks. much more efficient that way!

good luck

Someone said something about running gas to their garage, you cannot use a gas oven to cure powdercoat. The coating is flammable and that doesn't mix well with a gas oven. I'm using an infrared lamp to cure mine and it works pretty well and I am not as size limited as you are with an oven.

Is there a faq on this somewhere online with pictures that someone can show me?

Heres what i did. And hopefully i can start offering things for sale (this isnt me trying to sell stuff). But i spent about 200 bux at www.columbiacoatings.com for a "deluxe" pc kit. with about 3 colors. And then I went to penry powder coating website and ordered about another 3 cans of powder. and some high temp 1000 degree plus paint. I already have the oven and my garage is already wired for 220v so im all set to go really.

same here, i wanna do some black chrome over winter... would love to get a first hand opinion. i haven't seen it in person yet, but online it looks and sounds great

thanks in advance!

I was watching some show the other night (maybe OCC?) Any they powder coated the frame of a bike.... but the guy wore a white jumpsuit and did his coating in a room like you would professionally paint a car in..... looks like it was real messy and the powder got places other than the peice he was coating. If I get one of these, how much of a mess am I going to make my garage into? or Would I do it outside? Just trying to see how realistic this would be for me.

i do mine in the garage over a large, shallow box. the box helpes keep all the extra powder in one place. i just shake the powder into one corner and back into the bag when i'm done to reuse next time. just make sure to change boxes when you change colors so they are not mixed.

it's not terribly messy, but yes, you will get powder everywhere. just try to be careful and you'll be fine.

You Most definatly can cure powder with a gas oven. Powder is not flammable, it is combustable when in a thick mist form. Gas ovens can be used in the proper environment and often are used over electric due to the price to run each. If you all want to learn more about powder coating, visit my forum at www.finishingforums.com. Powder coating in essence is very straight forward and simple, but there is a lot to learn to get things "perfect" with proper process and know how to trouble shoot etc. Any one can powder coat, but not everyone can powder coat perfectly! Be VERY careful when you purchase this service from people aswell....a lot of hobbyists out there claiming that they're professionals. It may not show in the coating in the short run, but in the long run you'll notice things that shouldnt occur due to improper process. Becareful with the powder aswell, certain powders give off nasty fumes, and if you smoke stay 10 miles away with your cigerettes. The fumes, and powder dust that got stuck on your cigerette and you are now smoking can cause glyco toxemia....which is NOT FUN. Good luck, be careful, and have fun.

also be careful with nosey a hole neighbors. Powder in un cured form is considered nothing more than a nuisance dust, but OSHA and EPA can and will be pricks if they get the chance and notice too much powder migration.

I was wondering, what about using a kiln?

My mom is a sculptor and works with clay so she has a kiln. Would that be a suitable replacement for the oven?

as long as you can get to 350-450 degrees, which a kiln can, you're good to go
