You can eliminate the Balance shaft and balance shaft belt by getting an elimination kit. This will eliminate the risk of it tearing apart the timing belt if the balance belt snaps and also free up a couple ponies. Why do you say you need a new water pump? Do you know it is bad or do you think you have to change it with the timing belt job?

i wanted to do my water pump since im already taking everything apart... might as well change it and not worry about it.. is the elimination kits hard to install... plus is it expensive?

The elimination kit itself is inexpensive. However doing it with the motor in the car is where the fun begins. I am going to say the easiest way to do it, but when I say that it is not entirely easy, is to unbolt all the mounts except for the one on the far passenger side. this will then tip the motor down on the driver side. You will then have access to the balance shaft. You have to remember this shaft is fairly long so give yourself a little extra room by maybe having the front on stands. Taking off the driver side tire is a plus as well. One less thing to go around. Then remove the balance shaft and install the kit which includes stubby shaft, block off bearings, and cap.

To safely do this make sure the engine is attached to a cherry picker so you can slowly lower it. Hernia's are not fun.

Oh and thanks for looking out Velocita! :thumb:

How to do the balance shaft removal with the engine still in the car as described by JDNSBR:

The 1G instructions will work. There are one or two minor differences, but they are blatantly obvious and you can figure them out. I used the above instructions when I did my balance shaft removal with no problems. There is also a parts list :thumb:

This is all thanks to your best friend, www.vfaq.com . Use it, love it.

you forgot:
new idler and tensioner pullies
front case gasket if you decide on BSE kit
patience
and its always better to have an extra helping hand or impact gun (for cam gears).

wow! the timming belt instructions helped alot.. i found some but they were not as clear as thoses in the provided link... as for the elimination kit , i think im going to keep the balance shaft belt in and just replace it with a new one... the timming belt to me, i consider a good sized job...thanks to everyone who helped me out on this one...

thanks again
