So..On my home from work today my eclipse inconveniantly threw a CEL...It was a really snow/slushed and crappy day drivin' home. When i managed to get home, I looked under the hood and found a rattly/quick cluck coming from one of the pulleys, these pulleys and bearings have 177,840 miles on them and were used out of an old 95 eclipse. The cluncking is in the pulley somewhere..but would this throw a CEL??? I am going to go get the code checked because i thought CEL only deals with emissions/intake...correct me if im wrong but a pulley gone bad wont make the CEL go on would it? while sitting parked i revved it up to 3,000..free reving a car is not good but anyways, when i hit 3000 grand i heard like a huge cluck/ rattle bigger than ever on the right passenger side and now the noise from the pulley side is even louder. This is not engine knock or valvee knock, stuck my stethscope in by some metal by the pulleys and i can hear huge clucking from somewhere around there. Is there a pulley bearing gone bad? Can i get some insight....also why is my CEL on from a pulley gone bad?? Or could it jsut be a wet map sensor or something. THanks a lot....

Lastly, whta is the time estimate on replacing one of these pulleys. thanks.

That`s a chrysler 420a engine. With 177 k on it, I would say that it`s a water pump failure or possibly a timing belt tensioner /idler pulley, either of which if its loud enough could throw a knock sensor code. If it`s a timing component failure, a cam sensor/sync code could also be the cause of your cel . . . :talon:

my belt is squeeling now to so its really loose. i thinks its the belt tensioner or idle pulley. only the pulleys have 177k on them, motor is a fresh rebuild new water pump. THanks!.

You should have saved yourself the trouble and used all new pulleys. Funny you would spend the money for a rebuild and not replace the pulleys that cost less then 100 bucks

my car just been changed with timing belt and all its components, water pump, tensioner and other bearings that is causing some leaks and squelling.
now the car would not go over 20 miles an hour and u have to push the pedal to go and as you do so it would die. i changed the maft sensor and checks for boost leaks but cannot find one . please help to those who know more about this trouble.
thanks.

Ok driving down a long busy street from walker i heard a big thud..then my battery light went on. got home..no more alternator belt, it came off its track!! which sparked a CEL. I put a new alternator belt on it and CEL went off..etc. but now after 2 days of driving the belt was hanging off a little bit. Then i retensioned it and set it right with my father who was a mechanic. Then the alt belt was on there good, another day went by and it is off its track a little bit AGAIN!....Should i like get a new alternator or crank pulley....Also another thing...my subs dont get the power that they used to...its almost like the alternator is going bad and shorts out once in a while...what could the problem be if the alt belt jsut wont stay on..the belt was fine through the whole summer when everything was done, but ever since i drove through some slush and crappy water, the belt is coming off. Thanks guys

sounds like you may have some bearing problem, when you take off the belt do you feel any roughness/looseness in any of the pulleys?

the other pulley is perfect, straight. Which rules out the Harmonic balancer for the msot part. It almsot make me think my alternator sits a little cockeyed and thats why it slips off. Whe i undo all the bolts for the alternator to move it forward and backwards for tensioning, when i push the alternator forward and its pivoting, the alternator is way looser than when i pull the alternator back toward the front of the car loosening the belt tension. Its like a bent bracket maybe? I think that maybe be my problem...The belt is coming off toward the crankshaft side nearest to the motor, it is not falling onto the powersteering belt.
