Car wont run...possible ignition system prob.? Need some help

Alright well I'm having a pretty big problem with the car right now...I think it may be ignition system related but let me know what any of you out there may think. Basicly I'm running a fully built motor on the stock ignition system and coils......well for about 3 months now while driving my car will misfire and bog down on a pretty regular basis, sometimes it would be ok but then it would start acting up again and it seemed to be just getting worst and worst....well the other day I took it to a local show and on the way home I was driving and was right around the corner from home and it was misfiring bad and bogging like crazy and then out of nowhere just shut off and I coasted to a stop. I let it sit for a minute and then tried cranking it over, it was tryin to kick over but wouldnt and then had a huge backfire so I stopped trying to turn it on and pushed it home....later on I tried to start it again and it would barely, but I mean just barely crank over and try and run but smoke just poured outta the exhaust and then it would just die again. At first I thought it might be the engine internals but now Im starting to think it may be ignition related...some people have suggested that the coils have possibly went bad and I have no idea what it could be right now, but because of the way it just shut off it makes me feel like it would be ignition related.....let me know what you guys may think this could be and if you need any more info to help u determine what might be wrong then let me know...thanks alot

Have you changed your spark plugs recently. If not can try that. If you have make sure the wires are in the right spot, wrong firing order can cause it to missfire but run. Could also be a fuel feed problem...might need a new fuel filter, or pump. May also be the alternator...May not be charging battery which is why you have problems starting it, and it is not keeping the car running.

From your symptoms I would agree with twitch1447 and say an alternator problem. Pull it and have it checked but remember that they are not always correct.
I had mine tested and it showed good but car was still not right so I installed a new one and problem was gone.

I did change the plugs and they werent the problem....the wires and everything have not been touched or switched...the car ran perfect in the spring but then this problem started and has just been getting worst and worst until it finally just shut off. One thing that strikes me odd about you saying its the alternator...is would a bad alternator cuz massive misfiring and backfiring and then cause the exhaust to smoke like crazy now when I try to start it....the battery was hooked up to a charger while doing all this so it had plenty of power to keep it running so I dunno...

Well it could because if your ecu isn't seeing enough voltage to keep everything running correctly but probably not while you have it hooked up to a charger.
Have you checked out your ecu?

What color is the smoke? (oh ya stupid question but did the plugs get gapped properly?)

If smoke is white, car is passing antifreeze/water.
If smoke is blue, car is passing oil.
if smoke is black, car is burning too much fuel.

The smoke is definately white
