car won't go in gear!!! HELP

The other day i had problems going into 2nd 4th and reverse. It wouldnt go into these gears at all but after i drove a little in 1st 3rd and 5th it would go into the gears fine. So i tried moving one of the 2 cables coming from the firewall to the tranny and now my car wont go into any gear and the shifter is very loose can somebody please give me any possibilties to what might be wrong. obviously something with the cables but i dont know what. if u have any pics it would really help to show me what im dealing with. thanks

no im almost positive its something wrong with the cables but what do u mean anyway???

they are still connected but on the left cable some little gold like round thing came loose
