I put my 95 GST Eclipse up for the winter as usual, full tank of gas and stabilizer. I had it hooked up to a trickle charger all winter, and started it about once a month. I have a viper alarm system, and that seems to wear heavily on the battery charge. I went to get it out for this nice spring weather and it would not start. I had this problem before and it was the fuel pump, I replaced it and it ran fine. This time the same symptoms. Sounds like it wants to start but won't, and sounds progressively less like its going to start the longer I try to turn it over. I checked for spark and it's definitely sparking. I checked for power to the fuel pump, and it's there. I even hooked up a power source to the pump and it sounded like it was running. The pump is still under warranty so I exchanged it for a new one hoping that would fix the problem like last time, and also purchased a new fuel filter. I replaced the pump and it still will not start.. Please help me.

HAVE YOU EVER CHANGED COLD START SENSOR? ITS THE ONE ON THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING.ITS THE LARGE ONE NEAR THE BOTTOM. WHAT IT DOES IS TELL THE ECU HOW MUCH FUEL THE INJECTORS TO SRAY. IF ITS BAD IT WILL PUT THE ECU ON AN OPEN CYCLE AND FLOOD OUT. DO U SMELL ALOT OF GAS AFTER CRANKING OVER A WHILE? IF SO AUTOZONE GOT ME ONE FOR 25$ A WAY TO TELL IF ITS BAD IS THE CAR WILL START RIGHT UP WHEN AT RUNNING TEMP BUT NOT WHEN COLD. THERE IS MORE INFO OF THIS ON SITE. LOOK UNDER TECH/DIY :talon:

replace the fuel filter (it doesn't say that you actually did)

maybe if replacing the pump doesn't work you should start with the general no start conditions, pull codes (things like CTS and Cam/Crank pos. sensor would keep the car from starting), or you might even have to put a gauge in the fuel line and test pressure.

maybe clogged injectors? i've used stabil in my bike before and still had to rip the carbs apart to fix them :(

i learned personally that turbo eclipses don't like low battery power so start with that. IF it doesn't work pour so gas in the intake and screw it back on or it will pop off. Don't pour to much or it will come out the intercooler don't use starting fluid coz it will just start a small fire in ## throttlebody and scare the crap out of you. Everything i said is from experience not here say mine had been of for a couple years before it started and it was a B to start.

Thank you thus far for the replies.. It really seems like it's going to start on that first time it turns over, but then after a few tries it just seems to have that monotonous 'not going to start sound'. I also do not smell an excess of gas, while turning it over. I have read the tech article and read what you guys have said and it still won't start  . I did replace the fuel filter when I replaced the fuel pump. It's been sitting on a trickle charger this whole time and has a decent charge as well. I put a gauge on the fuel pump return line and it read at about 53 lbs of pressure. I bought a new ECT sensor and installed it today and it still won't start.. However for some reason the sensor wont snap into place fully (anyone else have this problem?), I'm sure it's making contact. I also checked for spark, and it's definitely sparking. Please help.

I just checked the resistance on the injectors and they ranged from 2.5-4 ohms.. I tried to listen with a stethoscope but there was too much other noise going on. What's really strange is the car actually started for a second or two when I had 2 of the injectors unplugged...???

Thought that it might be flooded so I took out the old injectors and they weren't sparking. Went and bought new plugs and put them in.. Still won't start.. I have fuel. I have spark. How can the timing go bad just sitting?

Can someone please help.. I've called Mitsubishi, I've called several mechanics.. My next option is to load this onto a tow truck (which will rip off my aftermarket bumper) and spend about 500 dollars (or more) getting it fixed at a shop..

edit: rep for those who reply.

Thanks,

dude everything you said about your car i went through i spent money on coolant sensor everything trust me i was there. i even removed my injectors tried them on my hyundai tiburon to see if they sprayed and they did well after i blasted those b's with compressed air finally well you know what i did.

I'm not sure if i fully understand what you're saying afroeclipse. You're saying the problem was that your injectors just needed to be sprayed with compressed air? Any other suggestions?

Success.. I replaced the fuel pump regulator and the car started with no problems. I was going to hook up a pump to the fuel line, but when I detached it, there was no back pressure in the line whatsoever. Then when I looked at the fuel regulator and removed it, there was no back pressure there either. I also put power to the fuel pump with the car off and it just ran constantly. I'm pretty sure this is because the regulator wasn't getting up to pressure. These were my thoughts, and thankfully this solved the problem. Thank you to all of those who replied, and the author of the Tech article for all of the good information.
